Paul Pietsch

I have just learned that Paul Pietsch died on the 31st March 2012. He reached the grand age of 101 years.

He'll not be a familiar name to younger forum members, but he was a top driver before the war, perhaps not an ace, but useful nontheless, and good enough to be in the Auto Union team for 1935. He also raced his own Alfa Romeo and Maserati cars.

Unfortunately he is best known for his wife, who had an affair with Achille Varzi and introduced him to the delights of morphine addiction. Although Varzi late "cleaned-up", it probably ruined a great career.

After the war he founded the German magazine Das Auto.
RIP.

formerf1champ should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
RIP. He had claims to be 1939 European champ?

You're possibly thinking of Hermann Lang, Mercedes mechanic turned driver who rather upset the class-conscious members of the team, especially the aristocrat von Brauchitsch.

Pietsch did come a splendid third at that year's German GP in his Maserati.

No, no. 1939 was the last season of GP racing before the war, right? There was a dispute over the points. I''m not sure what it was exactly, something about the races that counted for points or how many races did count for points. It's something that has to be looked up to know for sure.

edit: Sorry, I confused Paul Pietsch with Hermann Paul Muller.

I think you may be right - There was some issue between mercedes and Auto Union about the championship that year. HP Muller accumulated points as opposed to Lang's method which was to actually win races! (A bit like the Moss/Hawthorn 1958 year)

Can't recall all the details.
