#23
Entrant/car: ニッサンスカイラインRSタ-ホ゛

Entrant/car: NISSAN DR-30 / ニッサンスカイライン

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (DNF) Yanagida / Suzuki
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (no entry, possibly raced as #19)
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (2 / 2) Yanagida / Suzuki
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (DNF, 6 / ?) Yanagida / Suzuki
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (13 / 7) Hasemi / Suzuki

Note 1: 23 pronounced something close to Nissan in Japanese I’m told
Note 2: With #23 missing from action at round 2, and with a Hoshino in the #19 at round 2, I speculate if these two entries were in fact the same. The #23 seems to be as much Nissan factory car 1985.

Note: a car I had somehow identified as a Skyline, but don’t know why? No info on this entry except for #54.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This should complete the entries for the 1985 All-Japan Touring Car Championship. A lot of ??????, but some of those have already been solved, and I'm confident a there's a lot more to come. For now I will update my own files, match them with the 1986-1993 results and see what might turn up.

Best regards
Jesper

I'm playing catch-up with you. It's very time consuming looking into all of these entries, cross-referencing them and then finally writing it out here. I'm trying to do some real work at the same time, too!

I'm looking forward to the Skylines after all these Toyotas. Much more my 'cup of tea'.

Talking of which. Tea break!

PZR, take all the time in the world and another cup of tea - I prefer Lipton's Green!

Your updates on the unknowns has been especially helpfull, as it tells about class positions of several other entries. I take it that the Starlets were available field fillers from the N1-class. Don't know if this is supposed to be production saloon cars running to FIA group N regulations? I have found several Starlet drivers in these races, but also a couple of the Volkswagen Golf drivers were active in the Volkswagen Golf Cup. Furthermore I've found evidence of a few more group A races, obviously run outside the AJTCC, but more about that later.

I'm realising that the '85 season is about as black a hole in my knowledge of the AJTCC as there is, and as such, so much harder to explore. But from earlier, much more futile attempts, I know there's a lot of turn over in terms of drivers year-by-year, and as such the years ahead should be a lot easier to tackle.

Once again, thank you for your contribution, PZR

PZR, I have noticed some references to "JTC" positions - In your most recent Skyline post, as well as for some of the Starlets. What's that about?

JTC = Japan Touring car Championship. For 1985 A slightly confusing structure:

JTC-1 = 1001~1300cc
JTC-2 = 1001~1600cc ( also includes JTC-1 cars )
JTC-3 = 1601~2500cc
JTC-4 = 2501~3000cc
JTC-5 = 2501 and above ( also includes JTC-4 cars )

( championship motto: Don't worry - you can tell your sponsor that you won something! )

....thankfully simplified to JTC-1, JTC-2 & JTC-3 in 1986 and subsequent seasons.

A championship within a championship, then!

The All-Japan was always the highest recognition a series could get in Japan, if I understand the Japanese scene correctly. A JTC title would then be a secondary title. It does explain the many Toyota Starlets, which is a comfort, for an otherwise uncompetitive car.
The A-JTCC title was one title contested by three division, but what about the ATC? Five classes and five champions, or were they piled into one title as well?

About time to boot this thread. Updates plottet in and what follows (probably over the next few days) will be results from the individual races of 1985. Most driver names has been established and so has most cars and models, to establish class positions as well. Any contributions such as pictures and race reports will be much appreciatet. Finally, a big thank you to PZR for his efforts.

The Bridgestone file says Eri OKUWAKI/Mutsuaki SANADA, while the JAF file/PZR translation indicates that Nubuhide TATE/Akira SANADA were in fact the driving squat at this race.

The Volkswagens and their engine sizes are still unknown, where indicated and so is their grouping - and class results and those of other AJTCC1 and 2/JTCC2 and 3, meaning 1.3 Starlets, 1.6 Corollas, 1.6 Civics and the sole 2.0 Silvia.
The JAF-files had the qualifying results for Fuji, but only the times to the nearest second! - thus the ?? The same goes for the overall race result, so if you can (and will) fill out any of the ??, please, do so.

The European champions meet the Japanese on their soil and beat them soundly. Over the five hour duration a 7 lap gap/25 kms gap has divided the ETCC Volvos and the championship winning Japanese BMW in third. But its the first year in Japan, while the euros has had four years of development and not least interpretations of technical regulations. A mounth earlier the Australians got the same treatment (in their first year of group A) at their premier touring car race, this time by Scottman Tom Walkinshaws Jaguar team.

Couple of things to note from those results.

Dave Brodie ran his Starion as part of a 2 car team that also did Macau etc.. that year. Kevin Bartlett drove the other one - an Australian entered car I think.

David Sears is listed in a Celica Supra. I have a feeling that there was some reports that this car was an ex Hughes of Beaconsfield Toyota GB car, but I am unable to provide evidence at this point!! Jesper do we know who Sears partner in that car was at all?

Yasuhiro OKAMOTO turns up when I use the Google translator, but the name is otherwise unconfirmed and has not appeared in my notes before now - somehow!(? ..) The same Okamoto appeared for about three or four Japanese group C races for the SARD team during 1986 of which Sears did the Fuji World Championship round.

The nature of the Mitsubishi entries has surfaced on this thread before and I'm non the wiser after the Fuji final. Bartlett and Jones in one car could and would easily suggest an Australian car, but Brodie being ousted from "his" car suggest a Japanese entry rather than Brodies regular BTCC ride, to me at least. Mitsubishi was a regular contender during 1986, probably with their Ralliart Japan team.
