Both the March and the Williams 2-4-0's suffered from lack of rigidity in the gearbox/trandmission casings which led to transmission problems. When first shown to the press the March 2-4-0 reportedly only had one axle connected up.
When they, or was it Williams, got it to work, the lap times were stupendous so the FIA promptly banned it to save the other teams a lot of pain and expense. The transmission held together long enough for a hill climb and the March proved very effective. The March 2-4-0 was a popular Scalextric model and March made a comfy sum in royalties! |
