All but the wings, they are Fibre Glass. To give an idea on the damage to the Front and Rear Shrouds, the Front had to be cut into eight parts and the Rear into nine before I could reshape them.

The edges of the shrouds always suffer! Steel wings are always a good idea, they stand up much better to a bit of 'argy bargy' !

Off Topic.

But that would most likely be an FIA TR4 (they are about 100kg more than mine and 87 vs 92+mm bore - about 190bhp vs 220 - 230bhp). No Heally would get any where near it (or a 6).

Yeah, Super or Special Saloons but Old Nail did run in a few Mod Sport races in 1971. The only Mod Sport I can remember my late Dad racing regularly was the Victor Raysbrook Lotus Elan, in 1973, I don't think he raced anything else.

EDIT: He raced a TVR Grantura in a Mod Sport race in 1966.

Engine, only the Block is original! (this is even relevieved in places),
92+mm Forged Pistons, Crower Rods, Billet Crank, Full race cam, Roller rockers 1.7, Special Followers, Alloy TR Head (only one racing in UK - we kept with it and got it to work where other gave up - special offset valves) - so much work on this - took years to get right). 212 - 218bhp @ wheels, approx 240 at flywheel, on twin Webber 50's >100 bhp/litre from a 50+ year old pushrod engine! One off exhaust and induction manifolds.

It's not really a 50+ year old engine is it.

No - but it is Awesome and Spanks all Heally's

I have a Griff200 taking shape for all that FIA stuff.......

You are not comparing like with like with and FIA 2.2 TR4 vs and FIA Heally 3.0!

Most Fia 4's are close to the mods of mine bar the big bore (and the special Alloy head).

Best move on. But could I race it in Modsports!!!

Just a little note of interest,I once tried to obtain a standard stroke steel crank for a customer, froma well known Healey Specialist, only to be told that "No one use's them anymore, the only ones available give 3.2 ltr".!I' am not for one moment suggesting that all Healeys are running this crank/rod combination, but judging by the speed of some non FIA cars,it does make you wonder.

You can even get the block remanufactured in Alloy to! Hardly FIA But it would make them handle alot better Paint it Black, with the 3.2 crank on triple 45's...

Still a bit of a lorry, but would be heaps better. I like going relatively quick in the corners, so Heallys have never appealed. Even on 032's were used to spank the full monty ones in the Thoroughbreds.

Can't understand the idea of long through cranks though. All these old TR or Heally lumps are very long stroke in the first place, seems nuts to make them even more so. I'd rather go std crank through and bigger pistons (if you have the space though) - which is why some maybe do this. Have heard of 2.9 TR6's - if they exist must be from a 2.7 piston and a longer crank!?

OK, JE, getting annoyed now ; it's Healey!

This got me thinking. So much pain to get 100bhp/litre when a Civic Type R road car has it out of the box. Is trying to recreate the past, with objects from the past what modsports in 2008 should be ?

Back in the day, modsports were mainly current model or recent model sports cars that had been modified - MG Midgets, TRs, Healeys. Access to parts and modification was relatively easy back then. Why aren't we trying to do that now ? There are tons of MX5s, MR2s, Nissan SXs around, all dirt cheap with masses of off the shelf tuning kit available. They'll be faster, handle better and make more sense to the younger audience of today.

True.

Should be even easier with 4v, DOHC, crossflow high reving std engines.

But it is fun making old stuff go REALLY Fast. I am not doing anything that could not have been done in period (bar the head material - I had a new iron cast 4 head too ported the same) - but it does cost a fortune to do this to the old stuff. My head is a work of art, offset valves, all work by one of the Top Mini Miglia head Guys).

It is just FUN. But I would never put a different engine in it (has to have the original block and head (ok different material) inmy book, to be of the Modsport ilk. But the more I think ablout it the more my TR4 really about as Modsport as they come!

What you're targeting is something like a recreation of what was raced 30-40 years ago. I raced modsports over 20 years ago and what was going through my mind at the time was ways I could make the thing develop more power and handle... within the confines of the regs. If I could have dropped a BDA motor into the Midget [and I had the money]... I would have done it in a heartbeat. I suspect, 20 years before me, the guys who were developing cars like yours would have done the same. They were limited by a set of fairly loose rules and their imagination.

I think it would be awesome to see a grid full of big banger V8s, turbos and MX5s screaming to 12K or more, more fun to be involved in creating them and most fun of all to be driving them.

True - I just like old stuff through. Not big on overly complicated modern stuff. All cars I race or will race are Pushrod annd simple to tinker with (relatively) - I even go this route in my road TVR (through the stoneage RV8 - yep pushrod but outdated) and drop in a modern Corvette lump FAST.......................

Cool - I have been in with the Healeys then in the second race. Bring it on!

That Cobra had a big lump in it! 700cc bigger than a 289!

I wasn't comparing the Healey to anything (I asked for comparisons), you were. As Simon said, I was asking for direct period comparisons. I have no interest in historic cars that are built in a modern style and run on super sticky tyres. Either run pre 65 Appendix K or race something built in the last 10 years. That is MY opinion. The fact is, that a good Healey is extremely competitive in historic racing, especially the long distance races.

The thing with a Healey is that they do require a different driving style, bit like the slating the journo's gave the MGC at its launch,if they knew how to drive one,it would not have scored so low down the rating list.Once you are aware of the lump up front, you can then deal with it.Although, personaly,I think the Healey is the nicest handling of the two.
