V8 SuperTourer Test Day - with Murph

Hi all,
Just got some final details come thru from Mark Petch about the SuperTourer test day at Hampton Downs. Details are:

V8 SuperTourer Test Day with Greg Murphy, Kayne Scott and Paul Manuell

Start time: 9.30am
Date: This friday the 27th of May
Where: Hampton Downs, Just south of Auckland at Meremere

All public Welcome, so it will be great to see some numbers there to support what is going to be the most exciting and innovative race category NZ has ever seen.

This will be a great opportunity for people (especially those on here who have been quite negative about the whole thing) to come along and see/hear this thing for themselves. I have been lucky enough to see and hear the prototype first hand with Andy Booth out at the AV8 workshop in Kumeu. I can tell you with 100% confidence that the build quality of these cars is just unreal and the potential overseas support is quite something.

So then, who is likely to come along?

thanks promax, i mentioned that because there has been significant support from some very large overseas names as far as i am aware.

Think of it this way, with more and more 'stars' looking at racing in the V8 supercar ennduros in Aussie, then those drivers would probably benefit from some race time in a similar car say the weekend before. The SuperTourer class could provide that so i believe (and have been told by certain people in the know) that on certain weekends there could be some really big names visiting our shores and racing in SuperTourers.

Also when you take into account that these cars will more than likely post 1.03 around a good track/day at Hamptons (with the new brake package) this is similar to a supercar, so some of these other drivers would be foolish not to look at some race time here before heading to Aussie to compete in the supercar category.

Pity that you can't make it on friday Promax, but as far as I am aware TV3 will be covering this and showing it on their sunday programme.

What a great day! albeit rather wet, but GM seemed to like the car and all other drivers had positive feedback.

Next february is going to be something else.....go the SuperTourer!

Dear NZSTfan, With Mark Petches dissappearance from this forum and you showing the same level of excitement as him in your posting and promotion, perhaps we could ask you a few technical questions that you can ask him to answer to you then you can report the answers back to us on behalf of him?

So did the bloke in the sunnies get to take the V8SuperTourer for a run? Story goes that he shall be in NZ on a more permanent basis shortly...

1.03 with the new brake package? in nearly interview i read.. something new is going to be changed with this car lol the base car is going to be $200,000+ by the time they finish testing it

so who bought the 16 cars?

when will they be finished/started?

why aren't any of the other dates comfirmed? no Pukekohe, Manfeild, Taupo, etc?

what about support classes?

tv coverage?

That may be the case Promoax, but your not looking at the big picture here. This is a long term project that sets the benchmark for saloon car racing in this country for the next 10 years - these things cost money and sometimes you go over budget (but i'm not actually sure that they have). But once all is done and dusted and the development phase is finished the overall running costs will be negligable compared to the BNT's. I even heard of one of the holden teams last year spending 50k alone on roll bars to try and find the right one, things like that can't happen with these new cars as they are all the same. They have also gone to a different diff (spool) which is supposedly cheaper and better and also the upgrade to 6 pot fronts and 4 pot rears (brembos)

so who bought the 16 cars?
How would i know that? However I have been told by certain people that yes all 16 have been sold and there is every likelihood that the season may finish with 24 cars

when will they be finished/started?
Obviously the prototype is still undergoing testing (hence the name 'prototype') and i imagine this will go on for some time, but with the first customer cars due to land in August you would expect that testing would be completed by then. I had a chat with the ECU guys and they were telling me that once the map is set everyone gets the same thing installed in their cars - so there is no difference between vehicles - quite unlike NZV8's in which the well funded teams generally do better.

I have also heard the the first falcons are being built at Pace as we speak

why aren't any of the other dates comfirmed? no Pukekohe, Manfeild, Taupo, etc?

There are other dates and locations confirmed, your just not talking to the right people clearly. Btw Manfield and Taupo are def on the cards

what about support classes?

Cant comment on that one sorry as i wouldn't know. Maybe the NZV8 people could step out of last century and provide support for the Tourers - cant see that happening though, can you?

tv coverage?
Yes there will be, and from what i have found out it sounds reliable and exciting and more than likely on TV station that we all know and love

Hope that answers your questions Promax, and now i have one for you,

will you be there in february to watch race 1?

well it's hardly NZV8's fault if a team wants to waste that much money on roll bars. i'm sure if they went and saw Mr Fogg.. he would've solved their problem for a lot less money

and no.. i have no interest in going to the first race.

haven't seen any

apparently in the first test the car did a 1:07 on a drying track. Ken Smith has done 1.01 in a F5000 and the fast GT1 boys are in the 1:04's.. so a 1:07 on a track that isn't dry isn't bad. from memory.. Paul Stubber's CMC Camaro usually laps around the 1:11 mark.

Great video that one.

I see that youngster Andre Heimgartner has joined the AV8 team and will drive alongside Boothy.

Reminiscent of SBR taking on Shane at such a young age.

Series is shaping up to be simply outstanding

Really, you compare SBR to AV8, Heimgartner to Shane. I don't think there's too much in common there, just a lot of money changing hands.

If you say so. I read your post as though you were trying to talk things up way beyond what they are. When one situation "reminds me of" another, it is usually because there are many similarities to compare. I can't see any in this case, that's all. Each to their own I guess.

Those things aside, I'm a fan too. It will be a ripper series. I have to admit, if I can put a budget together, I'll be entering a young fella as well (if there are any cars left). It's a massive challenge, but it will be worth the effort if I can pull it off.
