Porsche GT3 class calls it quits in NZ

After eight seasons of top class racing the New Zealand Porsche GT3 Series has called it quits. Announced yesterday by series coordinator Douglas Blair, it appears that it would prove too difficult to gather enough drivers, sponsors and funding to put together a strong and viable series for the coming NZ summer of racing.

“We are of the view that it is probably best to exit the current competition altogether at this time rather than struggle to put on a show that may not be up to the high standard that we are all accustomed to and proud of.

However in Blair’s announcement he has left the door open for a return in the near future. “This does not mean that there will not be a return to what has been fantastic Porsche GT3 Cup Car racing at some point in the future and in fact we look forward to putting a new series together in the next few years. For now, we believe it is best for all parties to finish on a high at the end of last season and preserve the strong reputation of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge series brand.”

This one make series has enjoyed some fantastic racing between top drivers including Craig Baird, Matt Halliday, Jonny Reid, Fabian Coulthard, David Reynolds and Jono Lester. All have gone on to compete in other international classes of Porsche racing.
