GP2 Series 2009 - R09 Monza
Opening the thread, we're shocking to see that the grid had shrinked to 24 cars again: due to budget constraints of Nelson Panciatici, and not full recovery of Stefano Coletti, team Durango did forfait on its home round.
BTW, the fight for the title is slighly opened, now when Petrov catched pole position. |

Cecotto Jr did a solid job - 16th on his debut having (afaik) never driven a GP2 car before. I've had my eye on him for a while and he seems to be pretty reasonable

Sad to see Durango missing but at least Coloni is back.
Petrov has had some elbow pain but managed to do a great lap early. Great effort by van der Garde as well. Hulk third so he is in good position to clinch title in the feature already. But at least during the weekend. Cecotto had nice start too. No experience of the car and 16th place. Will move up one or two places due to RE penalties from last race. |

I quickly searched through old qualifying results. Sébastien Buemi had easily best mid-season debut qualifying with 4th in Monaco 2007. One or two others had 16th place too, but no one else had done better.

surely it would be cheaper for Durango to run someone with a partial budget than risk the big fine for missing a race?

exactly, the additional cost of running a car at one meeting when they already had the team and truck there has to be considerably less than the fine for not competing, even for a driver without any cash. and as for panciatici running out of money... i don't really think a driver running in 2 series at once has problems coming up with a budget, so that excuse doesn't really float. strange.

yeah, it's strange, but looking at Valsecchi, may be the team wasn't giving such a bad car... they had quite a chance with di grassi to move in the midfield, but missed it.

I'm hearing (can't see) that the race has been delayed due to a thunderstorm that's just arrived and flooded the track
EDIT: ah |

Doesn't look like there's going to be much worth watching. Still hammering down. Wouldn't be surprised if they postponed/cancelled it now
Going to be fun if we get rain like this at 2 o'clock tomorrow as forecast by the Beeb |

Well, they've started lapping under the SC, but Valerio still managed to crash at Parabolica...this should be interesting...
Valsecchi off in the same place a lap later...must be quite a bit of standing water there |

That was Cecotto Jr. Looks like he's OK. Big crash
I think that makes Hulkenberg champion (EDIT: Not quite) Last edited by jab; 12 Sep 2009 at 16:10. |

The last few races has put Guido on track for a very good finish for this year's championship and as one of the favourits for next year as well.

Didn't Petrov nearly have to come to a full stop due to the car (maybe Herck's DPR) spinning in front of him between the first chicane and Curva Grande (the long right hander) after van der Garde pitted but before Petrov went in for his stop?
Martin Haven said it was Valsecchi that was held up but it looked like Petrov's helemt to me, I may well be wrong though. (Btw, I'm not talking about Cecotto Jr's crash .) |

I'm sure Petrov cut the chicane at least 3 or 4 times though. I'm amazed he didn't get a penalty. Oh well - it makes up for the ridiculous penalty he got in Germany |

It was Petrov - he came to a complete stop as Herck spun off and bounced back, and lost about 5 seconds. Which meant that he lost the lead after the stop, and that was that.

Cecotto junior was really impressive this weekend !
Was in top10 in first race ( should have finished ahead Razia and get pole instead ? ) , setting fastest laptimes with Maldonado in second part race2 ( i think this could be 1 point if one of them finished race) , clearly overtaking Valsecchi... Ok , both races Herck was close to him so mb DPR was really fast car and not their drivers. But flying like this in his gp2 debut , showing much better than Coletti in his gp2 debut ( and Coletti one of the top euroF3 driver while Cecotto jr. scored 0 points there so far). By the way Cecotto jr. drove here in 2007 formula master season, so that experience paid off. Lets see how much he shows in portugal. |

Hulkenberg is the champion, then
And a great win for Razia and Coloni after the events of Spa How do you pronounce Valsecchi btw? MH pronounces it Val-setchi but Crofty pronounced it Val-secky (which I thought was the right way) |
