In some cases it will work and others it won't. Take Turkey, great track no crowds and China's not doing particularly well with attendances either. Abu Dhabi is a rather spectacular venue but there's no motor-sport heritage in these places however much one tries to force it.

Before any track was built, there was no motorsport heritage there. It's something that comes with age. Give other places the chance to built up some heritage.

I doubt any motor-sport heritage will come with age in a lot of these places, it's not part of their culture.

Before about 1894 it wasn't part of anyone's culture, and Brooklands was built in 1907, only just over 100 years ago. Time will tell. Give it 100 years, like we have had.

Assuming that motor sport is still around in some form or another.

It has been over 100 years and in that time motor-sport has developed into the various forms of racing we have now and they haven't changed that much in the last 30 years. In those 30 years, what with greater TV coverage etc. one would have thought those countries without any motor-sports heritage, would have had greater exposure to motor-sport and would have developed some form of racing but it hasn't happened.

Or as Stan Laurel said in the movie 'Way Out West', "You can lead a horse to water but a pencil must be led."

i hope that Korea will be different. they are one of the worlds largest auto manufactures so that means a huge manu work force and ancillary business connected to that industry. a lot of people derive their living from it, are knowledgeable about it, and take pride in it.

one of the big revelations from the past Winter Olympics was South Korea. dominant in speed skating but with their 2018 bid (approved?) be sure to see them in every other sport competing at the highest level.

surely winter sports (so typically Western in every facet) has no tradition in Korea but there they are competing nonetheless. China too for that matter.

perhaps they are unique in this regards compared to the other new countries but imo this is exactly the place F1 should be going.

It's interesting how its car manufacturing hasn't led to a rise in home grown talent competing in motor-sport.

Times are different, very different. All the new technologies have changed the way things are experienced. Nowadays you can have a very satisfying experience with a videogame without expending lots of money and even getting out of your house !

Plus the fact they were only "given" passports to travel in 1989. They take a pride in their work and normally are given one weeks unpaid holiday a year. This is a Country that when the recession hit in the late 90s, the IMF bailed them out, but everyone was so ashamed, they all queued at the Banks, to give (yes, give) gold and their valuables to prop up the economy. I cant see it happening here!

But how much could it have cost to have pulled in a temporary crew to clean up after last year's race, and to prepare for this years? With apparently no development of a Korean motorsports culture, this does not seem to be a long term track, and if the commitment to the track is lacking then I can't see building the city around it since it doesn't seem needed at the time.

But, what do I know.
Apparently, there are possible impending developments in this area from the soonish-to-be new management at Hyundai/Kia...
