Best Sounding Road Car?
What's the best sounding road car?
The banshee wail of an F40? The mechanical symphony of a Lamborghini Diablo? TVR's flat-plane crank'ed V8? How's about some American muscle, remember the Dodge Charger from Bullitt? Check out "C'etait Un Rendezvous" (Ferrari 275GTB), if you haven't already! |

For me, its either:
The 2.0 XE red-rop Vauxhall engine (great with a Caterham exhaust) The VTec in a CRX/Civic etc. Most supercar noises don't really appeal to me. |

You're right mate, it doesn't have to be a supercar to sound great, some of the Alfa's sound good too. I just included a few examples as "food for thought".
By the way, what is a "red-rop" Vauxhall engine? |

The new Mustang Cobra has a very nice basso rumble. The Ferrari 360 sounds sweet.

I prefer the older sportscar sound over modern sportscars. Even the factory built Caterhams have to be silenced to dullness by European regulations! Our Vincent Hurricane has a 1500 Spitfire engine with the twin pipe 'Sports' system and has a great sound with that 'is there a hole in the exhaust or not' note to it. The exhaust note is mixed with noise from the engine, the air filters, the rattly timing chain and the gearbox- plenty of noise through the audio spectrum, not just the bass 'woof' of modern sports systems (our Quantum sounds like that, a 1800 Zetec with a 3 inch stainless system)
As for what I think is the best sounding road car, well that's a tough one. I think I'll go for the origonal AC Cobra. Last edited by Bluebottle; 17 Dec 2003 at 14:43. |

Yup, the exhaust system is all-important. Big 427 Cobras are great but even they can sound a bit "flatulent" with certain exhausts.
I lusted after a Lotus Cortina when I was a spotty teenager, mostly because of the way it sounded. Great exhaust note and big carbs sucking in air with an accompanying induction roar. I'd have to go for carbs over injection anyday for sound. Turbo's can tend to mute the sound of an engine too, although they have great sounds of their own. Apparently, more manufacturers are paying more attention to the way their cars sound. BMW for one, actually tune the sounds of their sportier models. Anybody have any info on the lengths some manufacturers are going to these days to improve the sound of their cars? |

I think that Mazda ushered in the manufacturers worrying about car notes. They spent 4 months trying out exhaust systems until they got the sound they wanted for the Miata. The same goes for Honda and the S2000.

i know loads of people are going to say this, but my vr6 sounds brilliant at 5000 revs and above. below that it just sounds like a sewing machine powered by a lawnmower.

I've never really listened to what sounds cars make TBH although I like the sound cars make when slowing down & still have loads of revs (before changing gear).
To totally contradict the thread - I hate hearing cars that make a hissing sound when changing up gears. |

Alfa's V6 is the best sounding "normal" engine that I've heard (excluding motorbikes or course, but that's a whole new thread).
A creamy snarl is prob the best description for it....goosebump material. |

Ford Falcon GTHO would do it for me. Also the sound of any highly tuned old 4 cyl engine or the noise that a tough rotary makes (snap crackle pop
 )

In order of no. of cylinders (and I reckon the more cylinders the better they sound, apart from the bike!

TVR's normally sound pretty good. 6R4's sound superb (but that's pushing it a bit for a 'road car'). Anything with an anti-lag system on the turbo - that crackling is superb (nothing at all to do withe flames - honest).
Sunflower - I guess the 'hissing' noise you're on about would be a dump valve? Lovely noise! |

garcon - with you all the way on "the more cylinders the better", I love V12's, hence the reference to "C'etait Un Rendezvous" earlier. Also, the Ducati makes a sublime noise. I want one just for the sound!
The current crop of Ferrari V8-engined (from F355 on) cars are spine-tinglingly good. I love the Daytona too, but I think the flat-12 engined Boxers and Testarossas sound better. Anybody seen the Mille Miglia retrospective where Stirling Moss drives the snarly, straight eight engined Mercedes 300 SLR? Aural heaven!!! Last edited by Eau Rouge Flat; 18 Dec 2003 at 13:12. |

De-catted Subaru Impreza is quite delicious. However the first rally car I saw on full cam was Ken Wood's Rover SD1 V8 so i have a soft spot for them.
Morris is that a supercharged Alfasud? |

The Ferrari V8's are brilliant in the 348, 355, 360 series. All V8's should adapt that firing order to get away from the blub-blub-blub-ring sound.

Subaru flats 4's uncapped and angry the Nissan 350Z and Infinity Fx45 who knew a v6 or V8 could saound and wail like these cars away from ferrari? I like the old old roadsters all mechanical and what not, i think it was an old alfa i heard on Victory by design on speed channel- simply marvelous. or an old Jaguar XKE 12 or 6 on start up |

The BRM V16 makes a spectacular noise! Eight stubby pipes down each side of the engine fire the sound straight down at the tarmac from where it bounces all over for miles around!!
Although I think you're pushing the 'road car' thing a bit, It's got no lights aftr all
