i usually get on the train at the second to last stop before monaco during the gp weekend and sunday morning is always fun it’s a really special event isn’t it?
stayed with friends on the outskirts in the forest before and spent a bit of time aimlessly wandering around the city after melbourne reminds me of a taller manchester from a culture (and sometimes weather ) perspective. |

Question is: quantity still counts? Being F1 a paid-per-view event, in most of the countries, is not easy to increase viewers.
Because they now do the opposite when Bernie spreaded the free-to-air TV broadcast in major countries from 1976 onwards. And that was the key of F1's (and Bernie's) success in these matters... |

Yes, it made it more mainstream when rights to F1 broadcasters started happening in the 70s, more people were watching, now it seems all that is going down the swanny thanks to Bernie’s greed

More CVC's greed.... dont forget Bernie was with CVC only an employee reporting to other larger shareholders. CVC were only ever in it as an investment to grow and move on, and a short term bottom line growth was more important than long term stability. Im not saying Bernie was without fault, as he was a (relatively minor) shareholder as well, but it was not all his fault.

Hahaha really? It's the oldest trick in the world to hide behind someone else. "Not me guv, I am but a humble servant." And you don't think he was there, cajoling, advising every step of the way?

I made it very clear he was not innocent but was not acting on his own. He was clearly the one physically making the deals,(and doing very well out of it), but the move to pay TV at the expense of FTA seems to have accelerated since he was moved on under the guidance of Liberty. Whether that is the result of seeds already sown is up for discussion I guess......

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't believe that Liberty have signed any new broadcasting contracts since they took over; possibly the one in the USA is the exception. I am fairly certain that most of the moves to place broadcasting behind paywalls was arranged by Mr E in the last couple of years, but that those contracts only come into force once the existing contracts run out.
I know that is the case in the UK, and I think the same applies in other European countries. |

Yep, Liberty inherited the contract, just shame they haven't sorted it out so we can keep FTA

http://motormario.com/de-f1-latinoam...-sports-action
In Hispanic America, Canal F1 Latin America closed in late December. Fox bought full broadcasting rights. As many of us feared, only half races will air on the Fox Sports basic cable TV channels. The rest will air only on Fox Premium Action, which is part of the Fox Premium package, and is quite expensive. |

Plus in the 70's, all you had viewing wise for most of us in the UK was BBC1 BBC2 ITV..hence viewing figures were huge!

I think it was more that there was no alternative. It was either The Grand Prix or some crap on ITV. Still at least some things don’t change

It was awful. The breaks were the best bit. It meant it stopped Jim Rosenthal talking about racing that was, on the whole, worse than what we have now.
F1 racing has been boring for at least two decades and we are talking about viewing figure plummeting now?! Which is ultimately why I struggle to take this thread seriously. |

It hasn't been boring for two decades but its direction has changed in the last five years. No longer are the cars exciting. Forget overtaking etc. there's no sense that the drivers have any input anymore. The oversteer we see is purely throttle based not from speed, because if it were they'd be in the boonies because the tyres wouldn't stand the slip angle. The engines are crap and the rules which go along with the engines create daft penalties.
In summary, this is in no way Formula One racing. And that is why viewing figures are set to fall. |

Making use of music during the broacast, tighter closer camera angles etc etc. Interesting that their target market appears to be 22 year olds who haven't watched F1 before. |

So, not actually making the racing better, just manipulating the view?

I must admit, I think a bit of a music might make the racing better, its the obvious choice. Maybe they could use the Benny Hill theme?
In any case, using tighter angles won't make the cars seem faster, if anything they need to use wider angles but move the cameras closer to the track. |
