Zetecs are proper FF's IMO! And the best looking ever FF is the Van Diemen RF05!

However i do like the Reynard 89.

Tis indeed a great looking car, and your pics show it off well! By far the best looking shown on this thread! I love the front end of it, with the narrow nose. I don't think any FF cars are pretty that have a wide nose, like Crossles have.

He built a road going sports car which he raced after he broke his neck at the Festival

Royale RP24, in blue! But then I'm biased!! Elden Mk10 with the long tail which I raced in pre-74 was quite pretty, especially with the Lazer HD85 sidepods. Also had a Lotus 69FF which was elegant in a traditional sort of sense.

The RP24 was a fine looking car...followed by the awful looking RP26...my vote would go for the 89 Reynard which is remarkably similar mechanically to the RP24.

As i said earlier, i owned an RP26 in the early 80's with the wide nose which was rather unattractive, however i do think the RP26 with the narrow nose looked good. I do conceed that the RP24 was a better loooking car though. David Lesley has a really nice one in blue. In fact i think it is the original one he raced in his youth. I always thought Kenny Achesons orange RMC example looked really good to.

David's RP24 is his original car from '77. Kenny's one from '78 did look good, in RMC orange with black wheels, immaculately presented by Paul Thompson ( now at Jordan F1 ). Hope as 'gofer' my polishing of it helped to show it off nicely!

The RP24 was not pretty as Rory Byrne first drew it. However, I took a print of the original home one night and sketched my interpretation of the Lola T400 (F5000) car's nose treatment over the top. Rory liked the change and we went with the small nose merging into the sidepods. It works best in plan view. Incidentally, he didn't go with my faired-in rear end as it would have required junking the upper radius rod in favour of a wishbone. This would have required new rear uprights (RP24 is an RP21 upright). The RP26 was nowhere near as good looking, but didn't it work well! Oh, and SDC blue with 34 Shell winners stickers (in one season) is the best colour scheme. Big respect to Mr Trevor van Rooyen!!

Those were the days Chris! I 'gave' Trevor a bit of his old RP24 a couple of years or so ago! At a Silverstone meeting, the nose and a sidepod were damaged ( remember? - probably Devaney) although I think Trev still won. I retrieved a bit of the sidepod about 6ins square from the bin when we left the circuit, as it had one of the many 'Shellsport' winners stickers on it. It's been collecting dust ever since but it delighted TvR to have it after all this time. You could even see the red undercoat from the 'Scorpion Racehire' paint underneath.

I raced an awful Alexis which needed constant attention and had some sympathy with TvR who had the head off the RP24, lunchtime at Silverstone until he told me 'he was just freshening it up!

Yep, that's Trev. Attention to detail was amazing. Always doing something to it. The car rarely sat there at a meeting on its own waiting for the race without TvR, Rory and chris checking it over, doing something or other, me doing the 'gofer' stuff in awe of these professionals - hence 34 wins in one season.
Another regular RP24 pilot in '77 who ran his own car did things slightly differently! I remember seeing him pot of paint in hand actually painting his trailer at one meeting, same colour as the car - but he turned out OK in the end winning in FF2000.

Just looking at the Royale painting on your website. The RP26 looked so much better with that small nose than the wider one i used to run on mine. By the way your print of the Formula Ford Festivals looks superb on my office wall.

I love Andrew Kitson's photo of the PRS RH01 - the road cars around it look so dated but the sleek lines of Devaney's car make it look much more up to date.

I can't remember but what did the RH bit stand for? Was the H for Holman?

Did they run a 2 car works set-up in 1978 with Cameron Binnie in the other car. I know he also drove an RF78 in that year.

The all Irish photo brings back many memories. Whatever happened to David McClelland - was he the first of Rushen Green Racing's runners: a sort of semi-works effort?

Wasn't it Roe, Roberto Guerrero and Carlos Abdala in the full works team that year?

Not all Royale RP26's are ugly, as discussed earlier the nose cone was one of the biggest problems with the RP26, (the narrower the better). When I converted mine to side rads is looked much better. However without the heavy nose and the weight of the radiator it destroyed the weight distribution (just as Alan C said it would)

Spent loads of money in my early days on reducing weight, now have 6Kg of ballast bolted in forward of the pedals and have restored the balance. Check out this picture just paste in the link.

For the record the only reason I bought an RP26 was the top rockers. First time I saw an RP26 was in the scutineering line at Silverstone in 1979, (I was 9) I was waiting with dads car (same as we race today in Classic Clubmans). This real wizo looking FF with inboard front suspensions rolled up behind me and I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread and said to myself I will have one of those one day, 13 years later I did, but it was the top rockers that sold it!!!!

I always had a soft-spot for the Crossle 35F, 40F, 45F, at least to me it felt like they had the styling of a wingless version of an F3 car - they didn't look as spidery and flimsy as many other FFords.
