Good news

McLaren tested the Australian GP specification MP4-19 at Valencia today.

Coulthard and Raikkonen both did 70 laps - with no reliability problems.

No reason why they won't. Apparently the Melbourne spec has always been reliable - the problems last week came when they were testing various developments for later in the season.

They're doing a full race simulation - you can't ever be totally sure of reliability ahead of an event, but I think we'll see much better reliability from both McLaren and Williams this year than we did in the past few seasons.

I hope so. If Ferrari keep the reliability they have had, and Mclaren and Williams continue to go ahead as they have in the past few seasons, then the scarlet cars will be tough to beat.

Bit hard to simulate the conditions in Melbourne. If the race was held last weekend the tempretures were as follows.
Saturday 41C average wind speed 2klms from Nth 10% humiditie
Sunday 36c average wind speed 15klmsw 55% humiditie.
If you listen to the weather forcasters the AGP will be run in high 20s low 30s range. The temp in Valencia is what? The winner of this years AGP will be the car with the biggest cooling epuipment fitted.
By the way every other team thinks 90 laps will cover a race weekend so I think McLaren need a few more laps.

I think the unpredicability of the first race of the season is what makes the AGP so good.

That and the vagaries of the Melbourne weather.

They tried race simulations yesterday: "…the Woking-based squad wanted to go through a race simulation. Raikkonen's "race" was interrupted by a small fire during a pit stop while David Coulthard's MP4-19 engine broke before the end of the simulation. A difficult day for McLaren..." Doesn't sound too good - sandbagging is a tenuous explanation for their slow pace, but nobody fakes fires and engine failures.

f1truestory has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
maybe they are fed up with sandbegging. Kimi just set a new lap record in Valencia.

Well, Webber and his Jag aren't far from the pace either, just one tenth of a second down.

Yes, they were probably on low fuel, but we've said that about everyone who's topped the times. And this is quicker than anyone else has gone.

No it didn't - the McLarens ran reliably yesterday.

The engine failure was DC's on Wednesday.

Ah - actually I put "apparently" because I'd only read it on another thread. The news stories suggest (quoting Kimi) that the reliability has been found at the expense of speed - probably they have limited the engine revs a little. Valencia is a short and twisty circuit which needs good mechanical grip and high total downforce - it doesn't need lots of power (lucky for Mclaren) or great aerodynamic efficiency (lucky for Jaguar).
