SAAB Turbo
Whilst checking up on my brothers facts, I stumbled upon a strange entry for the 1980 Le Mans race....... A SAAB Turbo, I don't think the car ever arrived in france, and may not have ever got of the drawing board. Its drivers where listed as Stig Blomquist, Ola Stromberg & Heniz Schutthess. the last named also being the entrant
Does anyone have any more info on this crazy idea. I thought the TR7 idea was mad until I saw this. the fact that both where intended to take part in 1980 leads one to the interesting prospect of rally type handbrake turns at the end of the straight. Great |

saab turbo
I remember the car on the entry list. On Italian weekly "Autosprint" it was named "Sambo Turbo", and it was basically a Saab Turbo engined-Lamborghini Urraco. It was the work of Hans Schultess (the entrant/driver), a Swiss that raced at LM in a Lola back in the mid-70s.

Do you say that they removed a servicible Lambo engine and put in a SAAB turbo lump ?? One has to ask why ?? SL |

Why indeed? He's listed the year before as a no-show with a Saab-engined Chevron, so he's a serial offender!

T'wasn't his fault...he couldn't get his hands on an engine as they were being stockpiled for the Barber-Saab series here in the states.... okay, okay....bad joke.
