So O.Jackson stays no surprise there, but Smelt I hadn’t really heard of, hasn’t got much experience, but as we have seen in the past, there is no reason why he can’t make an impression

Loving the new @DunlopBTCC 60th anniversary logo 👍They're not the only ones with a fresh new look for 2018 though! Very excited to show you all the new car at @Autosport_Show & we'll have a cheeky little driver announcement too! More to follow later this week #notjustapaintjob

'New car' is the interesting bit... Hopefully that means we're at least getting a facelifted Focus!

Could just mean a lick of paint and a new driver lineup. Hope I'm wrong.

Just for fun....

Didn't Bartrum say a year or two back that he'd like to build a 3 series for Mat Jackson?

That Motorbase tweet was tagged with the 'FastFord' magazine so unfortunately I don't think they'll move from the Focus. I don't think there are any other suitable Fords, so I would guess a facelift would be the most we'll get.

Probably just building up hype for ASI. Like the other big teams they've been quiet this silly season

They could go 'Focus RS', which would be a cheap way of getting on the 'New car' hype train. Similar to TD's Type R being a 'new car'. Nothing more than a couple of new bumpers, but it sure gets the media's attention.

Brand new Ford Focus (not yet shown to public) is on sale in the UK this summer. It is entirely possible that Motorbase have had some early build cars to build race cars from.

One of my sources was mischievously suggesting this a couple of months ago. At the time he had just driven a prototype and their were several in the UK.

So maybe some manufacturer or UK dealer -ala Alfa - tie up. After all, Ford doesn't want to be outdone by Vauxhall!

It's fairly straightforward - as a novice, he'd have started with a National B licence. After six races, provided he finished and didn't get into any trouble, he could upgrade to a National A licence. A further three races completed (at three different venues) in a National A series (which British F4 is) would see him upgrade to an International C licence, which is necessary to enter the BTCC.

Think I will take a prediction shot.

Sam Tordoff to join Tom Chilton at motorbase their combined money to pay for Matt Jackson in a third car to take the title for them , its their turn this year

BMR Subaru to be real back markers now the moneys been spent and they had their turn .

Jake hill to be Indy champ

Tom Ingram to win all three races at one round

Yes, I suspect this is why he switched from VW Cup to F4 once he got his National A: It's a quick route to an International C.

Sam Smelt's results in karting don't look particularly remarkable. His VW Cup career (albeit brief) wasn't too impressive (best result 11th), and F4 (best result 8th). Will be interesting to see how he gets on, he may find his calling in BTCC?

His cars traditionally have been a great purple/green colour scheme, would be good to see something cool like that on the Audi. Never a title sponsor on them either?!

Big fan of both his liveries to be fair. I'd imagine AMD will stick with the Audi Racing red though.

'Not just a paint job' could simply mean a new driver or a new CakeClub recipe to match.

In two minds about Motorbase. The combination of a strong title sponsor plus Chilton money could mean a talent driver in the second (or third) seat, or someone that will happily be paid to finish second behind Chilton. The Chiltons are in it to win it this season, wouldn't want someone like Mat Jackson winning instead now, would they....

I was under the impression you can't upgrade your license more than once a year.... but I could be wildly wrong. I'm aware of the process as about to go from Nat B to Nat A myself.

Yes, I liked Newsham. Good driver. His surprise wins in the Vauxhall were great.

I always hoped Newsham would be able to add to his win tally after 2012, but it wasn't to be. A real shame to see him retire.

A shame to see him go. He's a better driver than about half of the field.

Agree that it's a shame he's retiring, always comes across as a properly nice bloke as well as a good racer, but if the timing is right for him then so be it - and I wish him well (and reading between the lines we may well see young Callum in a Ginetta or F4 in the future of course)

Well he's had a great time in the BTCC, so at least he's retiring with a couple of wins and 6 other podium finishes. Hopefully Smiley can continue the progress he made in 2017
