I agree with JV that your helmet is your dignity and you should keep it that way. One off helmets I don’t mind, but I long for the days when drivers were recognisable by what helmet they had year after year

Not sure about dignity!
Bit like team footy kit, every change in design brings a new marketing opportunity, in my book. Presume the driver hold the rights to their individual designs? $$$ |

Did I put dignity? Must have pressed the wrong button! I meant identity!

I would like people to keep the same, and simple design. However having a rule that restricts them is terrible. It was part of Vettel’s personality that he wanted to change each race. God forbid people are different!
We moan that drivers are boring and then one little thing they’d like to different we want to force them to do what we think they should. Hurrah for allowing this again. A needless rule. |

one was about how Jacques used to wear his helmet all the time because with his helmet on he didnt have to talk to anybody. |

Yeah, that was usually though just before the race when his concentration was on the job

Yeah they should be able to do it if they want to but why?! I think it's a bit daft drivers changing their helmets every 2 seconds!
I mean, it's not like they have enough things to concentrate on before and during a race weekend? Helmets were always part of a drivers profile and recognition. IMHO the designs have got too complicated, too much gold, silver and reflective stuff and not enough differentiation in colours. Even Lewis's lid used to stand out as it was a nod to Senna's. Now from a distance you wouldn't be able to tell his apart from Bottas's helmet. At least Ricciardo made his stand out last year |

They could at least have the halos on each car in a team a different colour. That way it would be easier to identify

Do the drivers' helmets have to differentiate?
The cars already have driver numbers and differing T-bars - is any further differentiation required? |

Numbers may help but at 150mph+ in some corners alone they can be really, really hard to see. |

Isn't that one of the reasons why drivers have different designs, to differentiate from the other drivers on the grid and also to bring in a personal element? Depending on the angle, the number isn't always visible and as a spectator, one isn't always going to be looking at, or looking out for the T-bar.

and beyond the T-bar one has the on screen graphics indicating the running order and for close ups they typically have the drivers name graphic on the screen. and then there are the commentators who for the most part say the right name. for sure, before the days of HD/UHD broadcasts and on screen graphic programs a uniform helmet colour/pattern was more important but that was a long long time ago. |

I do miss the days of numbers being bigger, also remember them being on the rear wing endplates as well. I do remember the Honda Earth cars in 07 having big numbers, but they were a one off

That's primarily because they had no sponsorship though, so they could afford to burn valuable bodywork real estate on large, pointless (to the bean counters) numbers.

You’ve hit on the nail on the head there. Although even when sponsorship first came in, they didn’t really take up too much and with a team like Ferrari, who didn’t want/need a big sponsor it was easier to have a big number. Numbers I’d say started to get tiny in the late 80s I’d say. That’s where colour coding comes in. Now anyone else seen the early 80s Renaults with their different coloured stripe on the noses? |

F1 is looking at continuing with the current regulations for another year with restricted development for 2021 cars. The rules for 2021 would not come in until 2022. There is a risk of the current season running into January 2021 as well.
https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/14...ion-of-21-cars I wonder how many teams are starting on designs for 2021 in the current situation? |

Not exactly good news for the fans who were looking forward to getting closer racing in 2021

In light of the current hiatus F1 is experiencing you can bet money that the R&D side of F1 that is needed for the new regs is going to experience big losses of personnel and the lesser teams will suffer the most in this regard which will affect the design and performance of the cars yet to be designed & built. |

Australia was a pitiful shambles for F1 but they have hit all the right notes since then to be fair to them
