Don't criticise Rubens says Stewart

Three times World Champion Jackie Stewart has thrown his support into the ring for his former driver, Rubens Barrichello, following reports that he could be axed from Ferrari after his contract expires at the end of the year.
Ferrari are on the lookout for young talent as a long term investment to cover themselves, should Michael Schumacher decide to retire in the next couple of years. Various reports have had Technical Director, Ross Brawn, enquiring after the availability of Sauber rookie Kimi Raikkonen and also BMW WilliamsF1 owned Jenson Button - currently on loan to Benetton - both of whom are on long term contracts with their teams.

The Brazilian has come in for criticism this season for his involvement in several first lap accidents, and has suffered more than his fair share of unreliability.

"I don't think he should be given any criticism," Stewart told Motorsport News. "The guy is a very talented racing driver - certainly one of the top six drivers in the world. I don't know what problems he's been having so far this year, but I don't see anyone better for Ferrari, to be honest."

Ferrari's Sporting Director, Jean Todt, has already given his backing to Barrichello by stating on German TV that the team was happy - at the moment - with its drivers and were not in talks with anyone else. He also claimed Barrichello's performance had been excellent, and that he only missed a podium finish in Spain because of mechanical problems.

"At the moment, I have nothing to say about my future," Barrichello, who lies third in the Championship, said during a recent testing session. "I am concentrating totally on the work I am doing with the team. When it will be the right moment, I will think about my future."

A piece of timely advice was given to him by team mate Michael Schumacher who is no stranger to rumour and speculation. "Try to forget the pressure of the press and stay concentrated," he said.

It sounds to me like ol Rubinho is getting very antsy about next year, and so he called up his old boss for a referral! If that is the case though, this is almost damning through faint praise... "certainly one of the top 6 drivers" hmmmmmm Well, if thats the case, then his Jordan will be very pleased with him next year...

Barrichello will be out of Ferrari at the end of the season - but it will not be Kimi or Nick who replaces him. Peter Sauber has told the press that he will NOT release any of his drivers for next season.

Rubens will be back at Ferrari next year. Nobody else in the top teams wants to drive with TGF.

The way Ferrari is set up there is little point in criticising barrichello too much as there are very few drivers out there that would make any difference if they replaced him next year(and yes hats off to montoya but one passing move does'nt mean he'll kick schumi's ass, race in race out).
Granted barrichellos made a few silly mistakes but lets wait till the end of the season. Ever since i saw the guy wrestle the biggest pile of **** that jordan has ever produced around donnington into second place(for a while!) i've been pretty impressed with him as a driver.

The pressure is on rubens and if you ever had to show you have some mental toughness now is the time to show it.

Personally I hope you do.

Ferrari would be wise to retain Rubinho. Pick a better driver to race alonside TGF?? Precisley. Can't think of one, can you?? Although quite frankly who would want to run alongside TGF remans a mystery. He'll show you up whoever you are. Ask Eddie.

Every driver is well aware of how is being a TGF's teammate.

So, sadly RB should keep his seat.

I think Barrichello will still be at Ferrari next season. It's a shame to see such a talentless driver hogging a seat at a top team, but while there are many more talented drivers in F1 (did I hear Tarso Marques' name mentioned? ), I can't imagine that any of them would want to play second fiddle to TGF.

Looks like it's going to be at least another year of The Amazing Escapades of Rubens "Brake Pedal...? Oh, that brake pedal!" Barrichello then...

On what grounds is Rubinho in ANY way talentless? Becuase he ran into the back of a couple of guys this year? Surely you can't write-off a drivers career on that basis. Please explain!

Steph,

Not a change of heart after all this time.

Just watched the second qualifying unfold on the net. DC number one, Ralf beaten by Jaun!

Moff, you're so desperate for me to not support Ralf that you're even putting words in my mouth now...you're a sad man.

VB,

Qualifying / practice - it's all the same to me.

Steph,

Ralf has proven his undeserving nature, it's not too late to redeem yourself
