data logging
Am going autosport next week with a view of getting some datalogging/video system for my formula ford.which system is best value for money and why? Have looked at various sites and the problem is they all look good .any help appreciated.

I have used Pi2 for 8 years on Formula Ford Zetecs, very good reliability if it's installed correctly and good back up from the manufacturers. This system can be bought complete with sensors for about £850 second hand.( The more recent cars tend to use the C dash with a system 1 logger)

We use Magneti Marrelli DAS 3 and Micro DAS, I would say they are the bext value for money because they are not baby toys like PI Systems. They also as much as the PI Sigma Systems for half the price.

The Kumho BMW Championship uses the Race Technologies DL1 which has proved successful when installed correctly. They also just launched the video add on.

EFI Technology Level 1. Slightly superior to a Pi Delta system in spec (which is two or three steps above a Sys2) with more memory and greater expandability. Also similar in price to a new Sys2. The software is very easy to use (and quite similar to Pi). We've used them on our race cars for a while now and they are ultra reliable (even when you reverse polarity, oops!). They also have a nifty video interface so you can record vehicle parameters racecam style.

I bought the race technologies DL - amazing and the back up is great just phone the factory if you do not understand something - also cost less than £500 new with warranty.

I use Astratec. Avoid it like the plague as the company barely exists any more and the software is DOS based.
Pity, it's a really good product but has lacked development. |

Hey Mackmot have you seen the latest toolbox software from Pi? would blow your socks off! Seriously though if you are club racing you need a system that will work everytime you go out, Sigma and Marelli systems are fine if you have a full time DAG who can run it for you. Look at the back up the manufacturer can offer you, Pi at least have support engineers which you will see at most major club championships in the UK. Come and see me at Autosport and I will give you a demo!

As long as it has a accurate and decent quality (not something Ive seen much on PI) x and y g-sensors, throttle pot, steering pot, at least 2 wspeed sensors, then yes I agree it is worth getting if you are a club racer.
Also if you are planning on getting a system then get Data Power by Buddy Fey while you are at the show. Its not difficult to use the data given above but you need to learn what it all means. If you are driving then its easy to understand because those sensors just tell you what you are doing and how you should adjust your driving to be as good as the datum you have got from a big team. A speed trace only tells you that something is wrong the rest will tell you what. |

As Mackmot says, I guess it depends on what you want to get out og it - but I've used Race Technology DL90 and now AX22, and I'm very satisfied. I suggest you take a look, the DL1 is able to read sensors and accuracy is very good. Very good indeed.

They're also about to release an LCD display for the DL1 I they've got a pre-release version on their stand at autosport. You can configure it to display almost anything and set warning levels and all sorts of stuff, makes it a really nice setup and you can bin your laptimer.

If you want accessories that will work with anything just ask datatech. All the sensors on my PI system are from there, top quality, but a lot cheaper.

Think race technologies DL1 is about right for my budget.Am getting the data software to go with it so i can do video overlay.Can anyone recommend good Digi camcorder to go with it.Its got to fit on/in Formula ford so will have to be sturdy.Looked at some solid state recorders but mega bucks.

I sprint and hillclimb , can anyone tell me how the DL1 performs under tree canopy ? . Does the GPS signal fade ? - maybe the rally boys have experience of this ?
I'm thinking of place like Prescott, Wiscombe, Lys-y-fran , Shelsey ...... Ta muchly Wonky

DL-1 is the way to go. It is light, works with any sensor you can think of, is GPS acurate, does track maping for race-line analysis, can export to MatLab, and have video support.
Be sure to check out TrackVision. It allows you to overlay DL-1 realtime and sync with the video for analysis. Check out the gallery and you will see what I mean: http://www.trackvision.net/ I would recommend bullet cams for video with a solid state video recorder but that is sometimes $$$. solid state recorder costs over 3 grand.just got to find a good digi video camcorder to go with DL1 and bullet camera.anyone any suggestions?

I think that Drive Data are going to be doing an external box to plug all of the sensors into so you wont have to wire in to that fiddly little green block! they will have a remote box with all the plug ins you could want to plug in all of the sensors you could want! they had one at the Autosport show and it looks really good! not sure when they will be selling it though, worth asking John Chambers at DriveData about it though!
