He is a well known guy in the business as it happens and obviously values his good reputation.

Well I dropped the heads back into to the guy I bought them from on the way to Oulton the other week and surprisingly he gave me my money back and said keep the heads (decent bloke) which in his opinion are repairable by a company in Coalville (Slinden services) who specialise in cast iron welding he also suggested knocking the hole through and letting them flood fill the cavity with weld as that is not a critical heat area of the head. So I contacted them and they seemed confident to be able to help so I packaged it up and its on the way to them now, I will report back when we see what they have to say.

Well I have had it repaired by Slinden Services of Coalville who I must say did a seriously nice job and included pressing out the bronze guides and refitting and re facing the valve spring pocket. It cost me £300 plus vat and another firm would have done it a hundred quid cheaper with no machining work but I was keen for them to re-machine as I was concerned I may break through again.

Looks OK on the photo So a couple of race heads for 300 quid plus vat seems like a bit of a bargain Al . Very rare these days !

Yes I thought the same and they are pucker F5000 ones stamped up so I am sure anyone with a genuine F5000 or Lola would like to own them, the porting work is great and I reckon you would have a grand in those if you started with some bare camel hump castings if you could find them in the first place! BTW I will write these back as a ligitimate expense so even better. Funny enough he said they may need a skim due to the heat exposed to but I have checked it out and it looks well within limits, SBC are pretty good in the head gasket dept anyhow and I have never blown one even when cooked!

Sorry end to this little tale. To repair the head they obviously filled the water jacket void up with weld which may and I say may, have been alright on a road engine but it caused detonation on that cylinder which resulted in blowing the head gasket between cylinder 7 and 5, melting the crowns of the two pistons and burning a 4 mm deep slot in both the head and the block, result about two or three grands worth of block and heads in the bin, false economy all round and I should have just binned the heads and had done, not a happy bunny!
