Smart cookies those Wagners. What they've achieved with the airport in such a short space of time is quite remarkable. Another permanent circuit can only good a good thing for motorsport.

TSR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
If its a Mark Skaife desgin track it will be crap. ( eg; Sydney, Canberra & Townsville ) He has not designed a good track yet and killed the Gold Coast track.

Mr Skaife didn't have a whole lot to work with, in regards to the Gold Coast circuit once plans were ratified to cut it in half with the light rail network.

Would the series really run 4 events in Queensland?

And can a newly-built track really be "like Bathurst". Bathurst's appeal is the Mountain, the lack of run-off and no room for error.... you aren't going to be able to recreate that with a newly built track.

Any new permanent facility is great news though, and I look forward to the finished product.

i took it mean that it was on the side of a serious hill.

However it sounds like a purpose built race track and not a street circuit

It is not yet "go" as the Wagner's are on record saying that it will only happen if the state govt weigh in with financial support. No doubt plenty of work being done on that score though.

Wagner, uh? So what would the creator of Judge Dredd want with a race track!?

Sounds great in principal, but the critical line is 'will require government support'. This can be interpreted as funding from a cash strapped government. Usually what kills off these plans.

Queensland already has the nearest thing to Mt Panorama in Lakeside, oh to have that circuit back on the calendar in lieu of QR.

Agreed that public funding is unlikely in the current climate, but you never say never in politics.

Queensland Raceway was in the most part funded by the State Government (it was not intended that way, but that's what happened in the end), and while the V8's would like another circuit in the state, I think they do pretty well financially with two street circuits supported/funded by the State and Local governments.

If there is a way, I am sure Wagner's will find it.

BTW - the hill near Wellcamp Airport is certainly not another "Mt Panorama", and any new circuit design will have to meet standards that Bathurst and other street circuits have escaped over the years. Certainly a challenge for iEDM & MS.

I've heard of iEDM, and as I recall, D3 is in Perth. What is this MS you are referring to, Spook?

Fair enough.

Probably the closest I've seen to a new Mount Panorama is Potrero de los Funes in Argentina. If it hadn't been for an FIA-badged series (FIA GT in 2008), they likely could have gotten away with grass verges, a bit less width to the track, and maybe one or two fewer alterations to the course layout.

So, is there a map of the proposed layout for this place in Toowoomba?

Oh yes, love to have Lakeside back. Still, there's plenty of quality club racing happening there. A lovely track.

On the Toowoomba track, I'm skeptical that Gov't funding will happen.
It's too far away from the major fan base.

And the Darling Downs & SE Qld is well covered with existing tracks.
Within a 3 hr drive of my humble abode is Lakeside (10 min) QR (an hr)
Morgan Pk ( 2 hr) or Carnell at Stanthorpe (2 1/2 hr).

I'd rather see the gov't money go to improving existing tracks.

This is the airport, so assume track would be in area behind, as city is on other side.

Development Site plan is here :-

http://www.wellcamp.com.au/business-park/siteplan

As to the circuit layout, it could be part in the greenspace, part in the industrial - the possibilities are endless - as always, it comes back to how many tens (or hundreds) of millions of dollars you have to burn ?.

Airports have a reasonable long term income stream - race circuits are another thing altogether.

It'd take a large amount of money and real estate to bring Lakeside up to some sort of modern standard.

The FIA published the latest standards for Track Design in 2012.

Although "Street Circuits" are exempt from many of the standards - go figure ?.
