Possibility of utes supporting 4hr HQ race at Winton same weekend as Homebush, interesting times.

Apparently some wildly varying idea on what path the series should follow has resulted in today's decision to delay any change.

Maybe now they'll crack on and get the latest front ends on them to keep the utes relavent to the market.

Sounds like a mess... losing title sponsors, not guaranteeing entries meaning the category organiser can't afford to continue...
Is there a fat lady singing somewhere? |

Too early to call of course. But to see a once strong category in trouble, with the only variable being the TV deal must raise some questions. |

The only variable is not the TV deal.
Go back and look how heavily the Mining and associated industries supported the V8 Ute series, now look at the current state of the mining industry...... If it was not mining related companies it was companies advertising to those who were looking to spend their mining wages and those guys are certainly not being as easy with the cash these days. The TV deal may be playing a part, but it is far from the only variable. |

If we take the ABS data, the mining boom ended between September 2012 and March 2013. Clearly deals would have been in place to cover the 2013 season. We would have then seen a drop off in 2014 and a further drop in 2015. Probably doesn't explain the crash of 2016. |

Plus a plug for the highlight package on the following weekend. On the very few ute races I saw on Ten last year I can't recall any plug for the highlight shows. Same for the other support categories. |

According to various contacts in the automotive industry, many of the Ford/Holden dealerships began to shy away from getting involved with teams, as the catagory was getting slower and slower at introducing the latest facelifts (it's seriously just the front panels), so it was harder to draw upon the synergy of race Sunday/sell Monday.
I suspect other potential backers feel similar. |

It hasn't been a sudden crash in 2016 - although that may appear to be the case from the outside. Those on the inside and in the motorsport industry have known for a while that utes wasn't what it was commercially. |

If V8's jumping in to 'save' the category at such short notice doesn't seem suss, then I will eat my hat.

Heard at the 12 Hour that there are as little as 16 confirmed starters in the Utes for Clipsal.
