Great seasons which didn't win the title?
The Senna Donington 1993 thread reminds me of just what an impressive season Ayrton's last full campaign was. His very participation was in doubt early in the season, and he faced the dominant Williamses and an improving Schumacher, yet he still won 5 races and finished 2nd in the championship. Has anyone ever been mroe impressive without taking the title? Others such as Moss 58, Von Tripps 61 and Peterson 78 come to mind

Schumacher 1997, how Jacques in a superior car allowed Michael in the Ferrari to get that close going into the last round is beyond me.

Irvine 99 4 race wins, but enough podiums to miss out on the championship by a single point.

clark in 1967...4 wins
dutch gp british gp U.S. gp mexican gp and what some have said was his greatest, the 67 italian gp: he fought back from being a lap down due to a puncture, regained the lead then had to pit again for fuel.....and he still finished 3rd.. Last edited by jj2728; 2 Feb 2004 at 13:48. |

All too easy to overlook that Gilles hadn't had a great start to 1982, with only that Imola 2nd on the board. 1979 was probably a better Gilles season, as was 1980 in the appalling Ferrari of that year. Pironi would've been champion had he had only a couple more races before his Hockenheim crash, no doubt about that.
Irvine was consistant in 1999, yes, but he only managed 4 wins in what was probably the best car, 2 of those were gifted to him, and it was only down to the unreliability of the McLarens and Schumacher that he won Australia. |

Prost came close to the title with two excellent seasons in 1983 and 1984, missing out by 2 points in '83 and half a point in '84. There could have been another 6 times WDC besides TGF!

Amon '68 (not even a win!) Petersen 71 Rindt '69 G. Villeneuve... pretty much all. The car had had some problems at the start of '82 but he'd have walked the championship. Piquet '84 (leading every second race, then boom goes the engine) .... Recently: Frentzen '95 and '99 J. Villeneuve 2000 |

Obvious one you're missing - Jacques 1996.
To make a point clear, both Gilles 1980 and M. Schumacher 1996 were mighty seasons. Some people say the F310 was appalling, but Michael still won three races. Michael's never suffered a 312T5 though, now THAT was a horrible car. |

In 1984 I think the right man won the title out of Prost and Lauda. It was a superb season in terms of Niki's fighting through the field and driving superb tactical races. Alain must've learnt a huge amount from it. 1983, harder to say, especially as Piquet's car may not have been legal.
Seems like the greatest winless seasons are seen as being Peterson 71, Jacques 2000, Gilles 80 and Amon 68, although I'd add Senna's rookie season. |
