Touring Car Attendences?

Just read this l article. I am surprised by this bit:
Quote:
Most British Touring Car rounds attract just 3,000 or 4,000 spectators
I thought this attendances were in the 20-30,000 mark?

20-30K would be about right.

I was going to suggest it was written by a journo who doesn't know what he is taking about but then I saw Mark Hales name. He's been around long enough to know better.

That sounds a bit odd indeed. STCC averaged about 15,000 last year, with 25,000 at the season finale at Mantorp. They're expecting 30,000 at Gothenburg this year. Surely BTCC gotta have about the same, 3-4,000 sounds very silly indeed.

Sounds like a nice figure to put in to please the DTM people, and makes the Brands Hatch round look good, whereas in reality the BTCC probably gets the same or more at Brands.

That fiqure is hilarious!

I have NEVER been to a BTCC event (I want too though sometime) but know for a fact 30,000 is closer to the mark!

The 100k figure for DTM is rubbish as well. Maybe at the Norisring and Hockenheim, but not elsewhere.

The figures I can find is that BTCC in 2007 averaged 28,000 while DTM in 2007 averaged 80,000 and had a record crowd of 152,000 at the season finale at Hockenheim. Those are not any official numbers, so dont take my word on it.
But given that, its safe to say that the article is rubbish.

Don't know how BTCC counts their spectators, but I think DTM counts all the weekend-ticket-holders thrice for the weekend-attendance, if they were at the track on Friday and Saturday or not.

That comparison was appalling - terrible journalism.

There was about at best half as many people at the DTM race as there are at BTCC races at Brands Hatch.

Because he was allowed to drive a DTM car?

No wonder the article is not factual and one-sided.
It's well known in media circles that Mark Hales just doesn't like the BTCC, for whatever reason.

For example, it's strange how he 'conveniently' forgot that the BTCC in fact draws larger crowds at Brands than the DTM.......

Article is rubbish, Donnington Park had 29,000 spectators although I would say I though it didn't seem as busy as last year or in 1998 when Mansell turned up and proberbly added another 20,000 just by his prescence which hit a record 60,000.

BTCC still has a lot to do but is getting there and £25 for a days racing is great value compared to watching a football game at the same rate for only and hour.

I know that when i went to the Norisring in 2005 and 2006 for the DTM, it was mega busy. I think the figure in 2005 was 140,000, and 2006 was 150,000+.

Not too sure about the rest of the rounds, or the BTCC, but i found in 2006 and 2007 at donington for the btcc, it was no where near the levels of the norisring for the dtm, although the dtm at brands last year seemed to be very busy.

The Norisring is always one of the top DTM events. I think you should compare Donington and Brands to the other non-German rounds.

I believe Zandvoort normally attracts around 60.000 people.

Damn, can't edit it anymore. So here's the detailed version of DTM 2007:

Hockenheim 1 : 101.000
Oschersleben : 63.000
Lausitzring : 77.500
Brands Hatch : 18.000
Norisring : 141.000
Mugello : 14.138
Zandvoort : 74.500
Nürburgring : 117.000
Barcelona : 42.000
Hockenheim 2 : 152.000

I'm surprised to see that the race at Barcelona attracted that much more people than Brands Hatch.

However, one should take that attendance figures -as usual in motorsports - with a grain of salt. DTM-attendance figures given by the ITR have been the butt of many jokes in German motorsport forums.

The Barcelona-race was awarded with a trophy for the best organizer, that would have helped. IMO they should leave Brands Hatch, and if they don't improve quikly, also Mugello. Mugello get's the benefit of the doubt since it is at least a nice track to watch on the telly. Brands is boring on TV, and the small size witch should make it perfect for the spectators doesn't attrackt that many people apparently.
They should go to Assen, Anderstorp, Brno or Zolder instread. Nice tracks, not to far away, and probably attrackting decent crowds.

Just as narrow as Brands Hatch, never provides good racing.
