Scanner Frequencies

I was just wondering if anyone would know the scanner frequencies for the teams or even what range they are located in. This would be a big help as I am going to my first Formula 1 race up in Indy next week.

You will be lucky to hear anything worthwhile I think

Most teams are so obsessed with secrecy, radio transmissions are generally encrypted.

I would also think that they have to conform to national/local regulations regarding what frequencies they can use. This could change from country to country.

(Probably wouldn't stop some of them though!!!)

I think I'm correct in saying that only McLaren and Ferrari are encrypted.

I thought all pit radio transmittions were digital so could not be picked up on an analogue scanner anyhow?

Correct. Ferrari have been digital since 1998. McLaren have just introduced a digital system this season. Everyone else is analogue, although Jordan use a (weak) analogue scrambler which is easliy defeated.

The frequencies for the teams only change a little (say +/- a few Mhz) from contry to country and year to year. Given the effort involved with having to reprogram maybe 150+ radios per team they seems have found frequencies which generally fit most countries.

This is the best site I've ever found for anything to do with F1 and scanners.

What's wrong with just watching the racing? Thought I'd just ask!

It does add to it. You can get interesting bits to it and in practice it is the whole point in some ways!

Adam, OK, I'm just a bit (actually, probably a lot) old fashioned. I've never managed to get my head around all the technical innovations and the more complicated strategies. It's always been the spectacle and sound which has formed my enthusiasm for motor sport. I realise that there are so many other dimensions to it these days. Bring back Edge, Jenatzy, Szisz and Lautenschlager!! Carry on chaps, I'll retire gracefully, now!
