Sydney Street Race

On the weekend a group of friends asked me if i was going to the Eastern Creek final round. I replied" No i will go when the avesco backed event becomes a Sydney street race".Some years ago now some punters were asked to enter a chevron publication about desigining a street/road course. From memory the most popular was a course designed under the Harbour Bridge and foreshore area. The NSW government were intially interested in an f1 event in the early 80's but innerfighting at the time led the event away to Adelaide. I have come to the opinion that the series need a Sydney street circuit,(apologies to circuit owners) it would be a great event. Tony C has thought about, what do we as the punters think & besides it makes a great topic!

We cant afford to get too carried away with street races. Not if you believe that TC wants 2 in New zealand alone!

Welllington was one of the great street courses well before Tony C came along and who could forget parts of the track being lined with the shipping containers.

Could you imagine the traffic havoc should sydney close roads for a street race?

I had a feeling that a Homebush street circuit was the most popular choice for Sydney?!

Isn't it a virtual ghost town? meaning that traffic wouldn't be a major problem....

.....Auckland on the other hand......

Homebush keeps getting picked because the Government did not want it being a white elephant. Timu would you come over to see the event if it was staged in Sydney for example. If Wellington was revived , i would make a holiday out of it. I can see the line now " The race brings in x amounts of dollars to NSW etc etc"

What would a street race bring to motorsport in N.S.W.? All it does is up the bank balance of AVESCO & it would once again show that the people who are running our major categories have no concern for the well being of the sport. I think there would be more important issues for Bob Carr to worry about down there than financing a street race just to please Mr. Cochrane.

For the good of the sport it would have been nice if the AVESCO sponsored round could have been showcased in Tasmania. Baskerville would be able to offer some nice close racing & it is a little bit closer to China. There are some punters down there starved of racing except when PROCAR comes into town.

You would be looking at $15 to $20m just to build the coarse. It would then be at least 20 weeks of disruption while assmbling and dismantling. Given the traffic problems Sydney has this is in faryland.

Well considering that Sydney has the highest population and that our rail and bus services are reasonable then you would think that it would benefit creating more jobs etc thats from a local business point of view. On the otherside of all of that is our roads ain't up to scratch, Sydney has never been one for good promoting of a sports event regardless of it's nature except the 2000 Olympics and as others have said it would create a traffic congestion mayhem.

Rotten Government

I seem to remember a time when certain sections of the Qld Government were saying a street race were costing too much and that one option being looked at was the Old Surfers Paradise Raceway which laid idle at the time & now is no longer with us!

I'm in the process of writing a letter to the Qld. Government asking that they refuse any application for a permit to hold a street race in this state. I'm sick of people like TonyC becoming rich on our tax payer money. I'll keep you advised of any developments and seeing i have a cousin who is a minister in the government i should at least get a reply.

I think Perth needs a street race more than Sydney does and that's not going to happen in the near future. Barbagallo is a hole and it's too far from anything, but of course the government is more interested in spending money than making it.

Homebush is the perfect venue for a street race the roads are wide & smooth there is heaps of room for pits plus 2 hotels, lots of facilities is easy to get too has heaps of parking it's own massive train & bus stations & lots of parking. Also traffic doesn't really use it much at all as you only really use the roads around there if you are going there & not many people do really apart from when there is events on.

It may be a hole to you but it does more for motorsport than any street race would. Wouldn't you prefer the money for a street race to be spent on Wanneroo, benefitting motorsport, not just the professionals?

Frankly no, Barbagallo serves the local motorsport community quite well, but unless your talking redoing pretty much the entire track it wouldn't be worth it. It's miles from anywhere, poor access and unless you have a car, forget it! I would much rather a new circuit be built (where I don't know) or have a street circuit

Longford in Tasmania had divers off Kings Bridge just in case one of the cars went off into the drink.
