Having been on holiday, I finally got to watch the race late tonight, relieved not to have heard anything and even more relieved upon seeing what befell the Mercedes. It's now half two in the morning and I can't sleep such is my excitement. It had the feel of one of those bizarre days you get in the sport once in a while - an animated Kimi Raikkonen eagerly congratulating Max Verstappen in Parc Fermé, Fernando Alonso coming in to do the same.. it wasn't one of those epic races in the sense of battles up and down the field but a set of circumstances where diversifying and parallel strategies over 2 teams and 4 drivers plus a track where overtaking is difficult actually came together to produce something with an edge and a sense of a spectacular race.
Instead of the difficulty of overtaking making it drab, it actually allowed race pace and strategy to play out steadily, with the only lunges in the battle up front, wild and controlled ones, coming into Turn 1 and comparatively little focus by the race director on battles down the field, such was the race up front. A 9, then, from me, because it had me glued to the screen and I just enjoyed it inmensely, plus the inevitable "arrival" of Max Verstappen happened in such circumstances, on his Red Bull debut. A weird and wonderful day. |

8 - So spiced up with the Ferraris and RedBulls, but Mercs did somebody so strange, and Alonso abandoned on home soil. Great race anyways.
