bingman should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
drivers making money

hi just wondering if any of you know of or have heard stories of drivers in junior formulas' and other classes (where drivers don't normally get paid, such as F3, fbmw, etc, porsche cup and other spec series) make decent money out of driving... Im not talking about drivers making money by being paid by the teams they drive for i'm more talking about drivers who get a good sponsor and get more cash off them than is just needed to go racing in which case the left over cash is profit? the only reason i ask is because i have come to learn of a few doing this and would like to know if is a common un-talked about subject as i have never heard of it happening till recent...

A huge number of sponsorship deals involve a salary (even if it's a small one) for the driver.

They do need to actually exist.

The majority of this years F3 drivers apart from from the foreign ones work in Palmer Sport as instructors. Some in Silverstone and some as team instructors.
Susie Stoddard, Johnathon Kennard and Ryan Lewis instantly spring to mind.

Take Danny Watts for example, he was working for RRR. Barton Mawer last year after finishing off with Performance was working for Carlin and their FBMW team.

I've heard FNippon drivers get paid very well.

yea but nippon is more pro level than im talking about... i heard of a driver in a spec series making usd100k plus out of his spoonsorship deal... well done i think...

I have heard over the years of some sponsors that paid performance money on top of a salary. If the driver delivered,the more he got. In most cases it is Daddy who provides the pocket money and any sponsorship raised ( if any) on top of the father's contribution goes to the team for the drive.

This is all news to me. Sadly we had to pull Jamie (Morrow) out of this years Formula Renault championship after Thruxton because sponsor money did not come through. What money he had raised previously went into paying his team. There was no salary. His living costs were covered by him working as an instrictor for people like Bentley, Porsche and Brands.

That is very sad news! Jamie is a great driver who entertained at Mallory last year!

Perry McCarthy got paid a salary by his sponsor in his F3 days in the mid-80s. He wrote about the whole thing in his autobiography.

Besides, you need to set something aside for crash damages and travel. Say the team asks 250,000 a year, you try and get 350 from your sponsors, get maybe 275-300 and go racing. At the end of the day, if you can get more money, more power to you. Most can't even get the 250 and scrape together what they can.

For a 24-hour race, a driver I got for a team brought $10 grand more then was required and the team paid him back. Salary? Call it what you want....

I was talking to one quite well known racing driver who told me that that is exactly how he makes a living - if he needs £250k for a drive, he aims to raise £300+k and the team pay him the £50+k and everyone is happy.

Thanks for that. Very much appreciated.

Jamie hopes to be out with Infiniti at the Formula Ford Festival + we're working on a few other options to get him back into a seat on a regular basis!

How true that is!!! Not so much sport for all, as sport for fortunate few!!! However, there are exceptions. If I remember correctly, Dan Wheldon went to the US with little by way of family money and has made it big time - just proves it can be done.

I think De Oliveirs is relatively well paid : last year he earned 100.000 USD at Dome, this year at Tom's it canot be for less.
