I was in the race in a red BMW 325 sport. The clutch centre plate disintegrated after 13 hours.
Nick Mason was driving with us that year.

Yes Andy that is our car but despite the caption that is not me . Neville Hay interviewed both me and my brother in law Bill Nathan who is in that picture and they mixed up the captions on the Video.
Despite the misery at 5.00am we always enjoyed the event, if it was still going - we might still be involved probably with my two nephews driving now !! Really good days though !

Richard, in the video of that race they mentioned a lot of teams including yours having fuel vaporisation problems. Was that correct, i know it was a hot day but i wouldn't have thought it would effect the normally aspirated cars the way it did ?

I bet you were impressed when you first saw that coverage, and seeing your name given away

I'm guessing it would have taken a good couple hours to change your clutch plate, if you had one.

I also take it you were the only one's to race the new 325i for that race ?

Yes it was a massively hot day, several people had tyres explode at speed, we also had fuel vapourisation , in our case for the first 3hrs it stopped fuel draining from our extra fuel tank filling up the main fuel tank with a pressure air lock in the balance pipe and cut our range between fuel stops as ambient went down the problem went away , by the time I did my first stint getting in the car about 9.00pm all was fine I did a double length run and left the car in 14th position overall.
The cluch went about 5 in the morning Bill was driving following the pace car it jammed the ring gear stalled the engine could not be restarted because friction material jammed the starter pinion , the car was stranded out at the Esses.
If we could have got the car back we could have put in a new clutch in under an hour and we did have one, but it was not to be so we were out.
Yes not impressed with that caption anyway I was interviewed by Anglia TV and that went out at 6.00pm on Friday evening.

Oh that was really unlucky Richard
Have you known that to happen again with the clutch plate jamming the ring gear?
I haven't read yet on this forum, but did you carry on using this BMW after the willhire ?
It does look to be a much better Snetterton to race on then, getting as close as you did to the pit wall through the chicane

Yes it was an unusual one. In 87 88 89 we used a BMW M3 in 90 a Golf GTi 92 a M3 then the Willhire ended because the circuit owners doubled the fee to the club they then priced the event out of the reach of competitors the entry fee for the Willhire became £2500 in 93 and only 14 teams appllied so it was cancelled. In 86 over 70 teams applied for one of the 38 grid places when the entry fee was £400.

The very best Snetterton layout was pre 1974 with the one mile long Norwich straight, a hairpin bend , then a one mile long home straight. Overall length over 3 1/2 miles long .
In 1972 I did a Mini race with 48 starters !

I bet the mini spent a lot of time flat out back in 1972 at Snetterton
Did the mini have overheating problems running so hard on those long straights back then?
I now see why the Willhire ended under such extortion from the new owner
Back in 72' i was only eight, but i do remember seeing mini's being rallycrossed at Brand's on ''World of Sport'' I.T.V.
I dare say the M.3 liked Snetterton, as they thrived on being revved hard
Is there a photo or diagram/layout of the pre 74' circuit,as i didn't know it was different to the pre Willhire setup?

Have to assume you've already spoken to David Oates....(or know him well)....? If not, his son (I think) posts on here occasionally. Tallguy_2, or something like that.

Remember when Snetterton looked like this?
The 'old' Snett was 2.71 miles and had the fast Norwich Straight alongside the A11. A race car landing on the garage forecourt via the hedge at trackside persuaded the powers that be to shorten the circuit using the old runway through the centre, as it is today.
What a shame that caused the original track to be changed, but its hell of a story !!

Most Mini Sevens had their radiators moved to the front so that the fan could be removed saving engine power. It was the most fun circuit( the pre 74 ) I have ever driven on. Huge mistake destroying that layout. M3 s did work well there. By that time , we had to have rent a drivers and our car was either damaged and/or mechanically harmed so we never managed a good result.

Sorry for reopening an old thread (just joined the site) but I covered the 86 Willhire as a freelancer. I'm in the process of scanning and collating my old shots, but I came across these from the race:

A very sweaty looking Russell Brookes (did he share James Kaye's car?)

The 360 Motor Racing Club (see thread about the Alternative 6 hour race) will be trying to recreate an element of the Willhire challenge with a 6 hour race for clubman on 15 August at Snetterton. Cars eligible include gt & touring cars from 1968-86

I just re-read your post here BILTEL.
At first I thought you'd perfected time-travel (and was thinking if you could take me back in time to stop myself from making all those mistakes over the years!)

My fault. English was never a strong point. Come to think of it, school was never a strong point.

I have only just found this post so I apologise for the lateness of reply.

Thank you for your support and kind words, Im glad you enjoyed the event even though the grid was smaller than we would like. We have already started work on next years event and confirmed the date and location...its Saturday 30th April 2011 and its back at the home of endurance racing in the UK ....Snetterton.

The website is being rebuilt at the mo so only has basic info on it but do check it out
