At the risk of stealing Graham's idea, thought I'd run this little challenge past you all.

What you see below are British Registration Numbers. Each of these has been allocated to a famous race car, and was carried when the cars raced in their heyday. Can you tell me the makes, and if possible the driver most closely associated with each car?

I’m nowhere near my books etc. but I think I can identify some of the cars at least:

1. DUV 870 Nope.
2. BGH 23 Nope
3. NUB 120. Belonged to one of the first XK120s. Wasn’t it a husband and wife rally team?
4. XEV 601 Nope.
5. 62 EMU Aston Martin DB4GT?
6. DAD 10 Lotus Elite.

Sorry. Can’t remember the names of the drivers but Dadio is still sometimes seen racing in 750MC races.

Two correct and you're almost there on the third.

NUB 120 is indeed a Jaguar XK120, driven by a husband and wife in rallies. Names still needed...

DAD 10 is a Lotus Elite.

62 EMU ? Almost, but not quite.

I know the ones you have suggested. Anyone else care to make a stab at it?

That's a great idea! Reg numbers from racing (and rallying)...

Unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge for that caper so why not post one or two under the same heading as my MOTORSPORT TRIVIA so we can improve the scheme.

Incidentally, if anyone thinks I'm cheating by giving you a rally car, NUB120 actually circuit-raced at Goodwood. But it's most famous as a rally machine.

I wrote an article about the MGBs 6 & 7 DBL some time ago. I discovered an anomoly. The cars which raced in the states as 6 & 7 DBL would have had great difficulty making it back from Sebring, undergoing a full refit and qualifying for Le Mans, in the days of shippping instead of airfreight.

Can omly assume that good old BMC comps had a spare log book and set of plates which they applied to a spare shell in oprder for the cars to qualify. It also bears up the theory that there are some innumbered competition MGB shells sitting in garages in the US.

Go figure.

I've got a feeling that the Aston Martin Reg is now on a DB4 GT. Its worth checking. Not questioning the original location though.

Fair enough, Peter.

The DB3S still does Historic meetings wearing it's number, but as with the LM MGBs, I agree that it's no guarantee that it's still officially registered as such.

I haven't seen the DB4GT, but I'll take your word for it.
