Well they're certainly not single seaters

Maybe you'd have more luck in ten-tenths rallying forum?

Rod Millen is IIRC the current PP record holder in his outragous Toyota. I recall this being brought over to the Goodwood Festival of Speed recently.

US specials mostly dominate since the factory assaults by Audi and Peugeot works teams in the late 80's, with the sole exception of a Saab works-sanctioned effort by Per Eklund with a special 700hp 4x4 Viggen based on his then, rallycross car. I think this was about 3-4 years ago.

Eklund I seem to recall wons his class and was 2nd O/A. Not sure how the times have moved on since the days of Rohl and Vatenen's battle up PP.?

Not a rally or a rallycross but a hill climb. The Audi Quattros mentioned in the first post were famous for going quicker than the single seaters of the time! From memory these were what they call Sprint Cars-like old Indy front engined beasts.

Isn't Pikes Peak under threat of closure?

Rod bought something over in '02 and '03 - quick google shows it was the Celica in '02 and the Tacoma in '03. Officially quickest up the hill in '02, and 2nd in '03. The Celica holds the PP record.

If you can find it (a google for the title will do it), I highly recommend "Climb Dance", a little video of Vatanen in the 405 on PP. Old, but glorious.

I think that's the (presumable nearby) oval, as opposed to the mountain.

Millen holds the course record in the unlimited category but he set that in the year when the course was treated before the cars ran on it, there was a huge outcry from the environmentalist lobby and the treatment hasn't occurred since. Last years shortened run (due to heavy snow) was won by Stig Blomqvist in the Mach2 Motorsport RS200. For details of the car see: http://www.mach2racing.com/ it's a fantastic piece of kit

That is correct. Pikes peak International Raceway was purchased by the International Speedway Corporation (ISC), owner of Watkins Glen, Daytona International Speedway, Homestead, Phoenix and so on. The track has been de-commisioned and the grandstands dissassembled. All of the raceway's equipment has been disbursed to other ISC locations.

A stipulation of ISC's purchase was that NO motorsports activity of any type could ever take place on the site.

Curious- like selling a house with a stipulation that no one lives in it?

The land has a very high commercial value and there can be no `ghosts' or competition.

Getting back to the original topic:

www.ppihc.com

The road to the summit of Pike's Peak is still predominantly gravel but will be paved over the nect few years; the next phase will turn it into an even 50-50 gravel/asphalt affair.

The've tried to hold a rally around the hillclimb itself but the rest of the event didn't really get off the ground (political issues I presume; they weren't allowed to hold any other stages that deserve the name) so the rally cars entered the hillclimb in the "unlimited class", complete with restrictors and of course the co-drivers as "ballast". An in-car video is on this page:
http://www.nocoastmotorsports.net/video.html

(you need to log on with the name and PW given on the page; but it is free AND safe - where else do you get that these days )
