New Epsilon Euskadi LMP1 for 2007

It's not a secret (see these postings on 10-10ths) that Spanish (or Basque?) racing team Epsilon Euskadi of Joan Villadelprat is developing a closed LMP1 car. Epsilon had already put a small image of the car on their website a while ago. Now they have 2 new images on their website:
Image 1
Image 2

The car is designed by former Lola and Penske designer John Travis and will have a Judd GV5 engine and Pankl gearbox. Here's some more info about the project (in Spanish).

Never heard of Pankl but according their website they have a long history in international autosport.

BTW how do we call a closed prototype these days? Is it still "GTP" or "closed LMP1" car?

Prankl build Formula 3 gearboxes mainly I think, but I read in Race Tech a couple of months ago that they were now branching into new areas, including sportscars and rallying.

That's a pretty sweet looking car though!!

For what it's worth, it was Pankl that Lucchini were cursing to high heaven last year for their gearbox woes.

Very nice, may it be the first of many. Now if only the ACO would take a second look at their regulations concerning the rear of the car, it could be so much better looking.

P.S. - FIRE, they're still called LMP1 the term GTP is now defunct.

they did indeed do the Lucchini gearbox. But the woes of that box were down to the team.

Pankl are one of the world leading motorsport engineering firms, I visited thier HQ in Austria last year... most top LMP's will use at least some of thier parts. See my article on the 'box in V16N2 Racecar Engineering. Its fascinating - dry sumped and in theory gives greater power at the wheels as there are less losses in the oil

it looks nice but the rear end looks very much like a lola B05/40 which makes the car look a bit odd but it will be nice to see this car racing and it will add a little bit of flare when it starts racing whenever that is, i feel a judd engine in this one but might not be hard to guess

I wasn't trying to bash Pankl by bringing the Lucchini thing up. I know it wasn't totally Pankl's fault, I was just giving context to the company in sportscars for those who hadn't heard of them.

Looking as those pictures, I'm wondering how easy it would be to fit a canopy to a current open topped car. Dimensions for open and closed cars are the same. You can even make out the drivers side head protection, unlike the old GTP's.

Would be an effective way to distinguish between P1 and P2 examples of the RS Spyder/Acura.

Was there not also the mention that the Lola B06/10 could be made in a closed toP version?

Initially it was announced from Lola that also a closed top version is available, but nobody ordered it yet. There were also some renderings published in Autosport (?) afik

Am i right in saying that the ACO penalise closed top prototypes by restricting their tyre width because of the aero advantages gained as they did with the Bentley?

Also that front end looks like a cut and shut job between an R8 and GT One.

Then a closed top would surely be the right way to go wouldn't it, or am i wrong in my assumption that they are cleaner through the air and therfore quicker. Or is driver comfort an issue with the heat we,ve had the last few years, and air con on the way for all closed cars? can't imagine it would be.
