2007 Sandown Historics "Return of the Thunder - Mighty Mustangs"

Well it's on again on November 9-11, Will be a great event for sure. As the event name suggests the Ford Mustang is the headline act for 2007 with a number of well known Mustangs to be on show and on track, they are taking the Formula 5000's place as they take a year off and will be back in 2008 however a handfull will be running in their Historic group.

Over 200 Mustangs will be on display and racing over the 3 days with the Mustang club of Victoria organising a show and shine. The Racing Mustang's include various ATCC cars and the Jim Richards Sports Sedan (First race car in Australia). There will even be a Mustang Regularity. Other marques that will be on display include Ferrari and Lotus of which the Victorian clubs will also be having cars compete and a show and shine.

Patron of the meeting will be Jim Richards who will be doing various things in some of his historical cars.

Elfin Cars have thrown support behind the event as well and will have both displays and number of Historic cars competing. Former Grand Prix driver Tony Gaze will be doing the honours for Rememberance Day with the RSL attending and even former Army Jeeps to do a parade.

Free paddock and pit access with the price of admission and the MGCC have been successfull in organising for the 'Red Hill car park' to be opened to the public (Next to the overpass) so the paying spectators car drive their car to the fence and take some better pictures than in the past.

Sports Sedans will also make their first appearance at a Historic event with a celebration of Sports Sedans class and a number of static displays. Other classes are the usual ones.

Interestingly for every entry recieved the organisers are donating a tree to make this the first carbon neutral event in Australia I think? Be interesting to see how it all goes!

The 3 main Mustangs I know of are the Moffat Coke Boss 302, Ian 'Pete' Geoghegan Trans Am and the Jim Richards Sports Sedan but ill try and find out...

Mike Roddy will be racing the ex-TWR Jaguar XJS

that won Spa 24hour in Group A & C touring cars races over the race weekend and as of a few days ago there were 320 entries all up including 70 Historic Touring cars over 2 grids and 40 Group S cars. Sports Sedans grid unfortunately has just 25 cars but there was still 2 days of entries to come.

Just as the last entries were coming in there were over 300 cars entered for Sandown. Should be BIG. Group A & C are a little small which is odd...Anyone know if the GTR's are allowed to run?

Mike's Jag sounds really good. Grp S was really good last year. Shame the 5000s can't make it. If I can find the tapes we'll run a couple of the races from last year on Cup night on In Pit Lane for those in Melbourne. I think you can still get some of them via the Podcast.
Roger James and Jim Richards will be guests on the show next Tuesday. Jim is this years patron. Shame the Sports Sedan guys especially from interstate aren't support it fully I know the local guys have worked damn hard to make it special. Still if Darren Hossacks car is there then that alone makes it worth going out for let alone all the great historic stuff.

There was about 5 or 6 F5000's entered this year, alongised Rusty French 935 and the Atlantics could be quite good. I agree its a shame that the NSW guys didnt come down but some may be running the national round a few weeks after?

Which 935 is Rusty running - last take he had three (3).

I thought I saw the ex-Alan Jones car (non-black one) up for sale, and I haven't seen that race but have seen both the black ones so presumably one of them.

his normal no.7 car is the car he is running i think...the one he ran at PI earlier this year etc.

Well I didn't go (moving house instead) but Dad & his mates did and they enjoyed themselves, particularly the historic sports sedans which were making their first appearance I think. There is some discussion in the Aust touring car forum in any case.
