Monterey Historics 2008

Hi All,
we got our report on for this years edition of the Monterey Historics. The event is now covering four days, in an already overcrowded schedule of auctions, parties and Concours d'Elegance. This year's edition saw many interesting cars, and a breathtaking amount of Formula Junior Cars, honouring the 50th anniversary of the FJ series, and not only a tribute to Count Lurani, but also to Duncan Rabagliati, who has kept the brand very much alive. It was more than fitting that he drove around in a for me totally unknown model, named Rytune Scorpion. It was not the fastest car of the field, but bringing out these oddities is what historic racing is all about.
Further interesting cars were the Tyrrell P34 Chassis #8, that has beee restored to the original P34 livery, in spite of being the final chassis, which was used for testing the Renault engine. It is a welcome change to see a non blue-white P34 being hauled around the track. It was the fastest F1 of the weekend, putting in laps of just over 1 minute 20 seconds. Mario Andretti drove his old Lotus 78, now owned by Duncan Dayton, for a number of demo laps. He reportedly managed laps of about 1 minute 25 seconds. (The Monterey Historics is less about fast racing than about showing cars, so individual lap times are difficult to come by).
The Ferrari 312P that stayed in spyder version in the USA for many years, has come back to Europe, and has been restored as a Coupe. Chassis 872 was not only flown around the race track, but was also invited to join the Racing Ferrari Class on the Sunday Pebble Beach Concours. David Franklin was the driver, so there is every chance that this flat-iron will make more appearences in European events in the seasons to come.
Anyway, here is the link to the report and the slide show, and I may put on more pics as soon as I will return from my extended stay in the USA and Canada
