Best brake setup for a tarmac spec Mk2 Escort?
We are building a tarmac spec Grp4 Mk2 escort of a high spec.. and are finally getting round to doing the brakes. We will be using 15" wheels.
We are probably gonna be using A.P. racing 'monte' 4 pots/discs for the front with a twin m/c bias pedal box and a bias/balance adjuster for the rear brakes and a hydraulic handbrake with its own m/c. We would like to know if we should be using the same disc size for the rear as the front and what calipers to use for the rear. Obviously minimum weight possible vs braking dynamics. Would you get a varying brake balance at different speeds if you used slighly smaller discs for the rear?.. and if we did use the same size of discs as the front would you be likely to come up against the same issue due to being unable to get the rear pads up to operating temps consistantly? or could you get round that by using slightly softer pads? Be really interesting to learn about the braking performance dynamics of different discs sizes and single vs multi piston calipers, temps and how/if they differ at different speeds. So if anyone has any knowledge on the subject or can recomend a good book I'd be very grateful.. Many thanks.. |

I think you will find most people will back the rear brakes right off in relation to the fronts to stop the rear wheels locking under weight transfer with heavy braking so I dont see a problem, the brakes on my car are 12" discs alround but the calipers on the back are way smaller than the front and the rear discs are a lot thinner and lighter and the discs are an OEM performance option for for the cars.

My fronts are 288 mm and vented, with 4 pot calipers where my rears are little OEM jobs, non vented and about 252 mm single sliders with bias adjuster... which tends to be set in pretty much in the middle, good adjustment for wet or dry.
