Not so sure about the layout extension.
Reminds me of the ill-fated infield track at Sandown that sent the Light Car Club to the wall in the 80's. EC's charm has always been the flow. Unfortunately, the tight new section looks like a go-kart track! |

They missed the opportunity to call it the St Mary's Ultimate Track, put permanent lighting in place and run events as "Night-time SMUT".

And if it doesn't prove popular there's nothing stopping them using the existing layout. |

Remember that the new bit of track was not built with extending the main track in mind, it was built to lengthen the lap of the new second circuit out the back.
They may well decide to keep using the (almost) original layout |

It might also be time to name some corners as the counting method will just sound ridiculous and will change depending on which layout they are using. New website (still use the old website address) which looks great and is quite interesting. Last edited by David Towe; 22 May 2012 at 08:23. |

There's been some work on Corporate Hill from what I noticed over the weekend.
From the Spectator Areas over at the final corner, you can see the new section of the track. I think a better spot will be further towards the new section, which is elevated higher, so you can a better view of the new section as well as into the final few corners. The M3 should be right at home in the tighter changes of direction David! |

I was out there today, just watching not driving unfortunately. Every driver I spoke to didnt like it. the comments were, too slow, single file, too much like a go-kart track, very technical but no flow and "it's like they tried to cram as much as they could into the smallest possible place".
I didn't get up there to see what it was like as a spectator but that is tomorrow's plan. |

Thanks for asking Jacal, I was planning to get there but things conspired against me both days. I was interested in the comments you got from drivers, perhaps it won't be as much fun as I first thought??

Sydney Motorsport Park
A hot lap of the newly unveiled Sydney Motorsport Park in an F3 car - track is beautifully undulating with some highly cambered turns, nice around the back with plenty of overtaking opportunities. Fast and exciting racing

I go to Eastern Creek a lot and have been horrified at what the end result would be from the moment I saw the initial earthworks for the track extension. When I was at the Sports Car Carnival last month and saw the finished product it was even worse than I imagined and a textbook example in how not to design a racing circuit. It is too slow, one line with no overtaking possibilities for anything bigger and faster than a postie's bike. This is particularly sad when you look at the great piece of land they had to work with. What they should have done is leave Turn 7 with a fast sweeping corner,go to a straight over the hill, have a Barbagello style bowl at the bottom of the hill and go straight back up the hill to a tight right hand corner to go back onto the old circuit at Turn 8.In the end the extensions are not going to be used as part of a combined track and will only be used for the 2nd circuit lap dash option.Already the July Historic meeting which was to run on the combined circuit have decided to go back to the original track after the FF and Group S competitors that raced in the State meeting at the weekend universally condemned the extensions as rubbish. What a sad waste.
