As an Examining Observer.....sorry.....Exam. Post Chief, I've no objections to anyone carrying a whistle, but it must ONLY be used in an emergency when either myself or my IO are otherwise busy. When on post please check with your PC, as some PC's don't like it.

All this talk of whistles......he he!

I have a whistle, I use it at work. It comes in handy when the mark 1 gob is out of range and some motorist decides to try and kill your mate!!
It's an Acme Thunderer and it's plenty loud enough....I'll bring it and keep it in my bag... With my gloves, hat, sunscreen, flask, chairs, lunchboxeS!, spare clothing, spare gloves, small inflatable boat (if this summer is anything like last years !) and variety of other stuff that all sounds fairly essential.

Thanks again guys & gals, this is all the sort of stuff I was wondering about, "What kit do I need?" "What's essential?" "What's useful?" etc. etc. etc.
Your all really helpful.....

Now remember

look in to my eyes,

not around the pork pies,

but in to my eyes

Sonic,
I'm pleased you know why we all should carry whistles.
just remember that if you hear a whistle, look in the direction of the oncoming traffic, before you look at where the whistle is coming from.
You might want to think about scanners, very useful for knowing what's happening, especially when you're alone on post and haven't seen a car for 2 hours
Small digital camera. Can't be used on post, but can be well used during breaks.

If they're not pork, they won't work.
Sausage rolls worked very well at the Goodwood revival, 2 years ago.
Also, we use recovery trucks after we've used the magnets

now you have to remember that the magnets on cars are Pork Pies.

Now for bikes i find that Bakewell Tarts have the same effect.

every time i had a biggy last season whilst doing PC,it happened when i was munching on a Bakewell Tart.
The other added advantage of a scanner is,when everyone else has a scanner & giggling away & you not got a clue whats going on.
But don`t rush, buy your stuff bit by bit

You'll need that for the travelling expenses!
Bakewell tarts also work at BTCC meetings, especially the ones our I/O was eating during the Seat races, at Rockingham last year.

I use a scanner, but I also use an earpiece with it for a few reasons... first of all, it makes you look like an FBI agent (albeit a very orange one) Secondly, it's easier to hear what's being said - particularly when the cars are passing you. But finally, if you're standing close to the I/O when they call in a message to Control, your scanner can cause a lot of feedback and everyone will just hear a high-pitched squeal - NOT a good sign coming from any post!! If you're looking at scanners, make sure it can pick up 169.3375 - the frequency used for MSA events (and where more than one frequency is used at an event, that one is the marshal-Control frequency).

One more item for your kit-bag came into my head... if your bag isn't waterproof, invest a couple of quid in a waterproof wallet (or even just throw in a couple of re-sealable sandwich-bags) to put your grading card etc into. My MSA licence was very close to becoming wrecked after Sunday! So much for having a water resistant bag. Resistant, yes, but only to the first five raindrops.

Burnsie,
Go to Rymans, or any other good stationers and get a small plastic wallet/box,
but very good points though.

A good strong bin liner carried in your kit bag is priceless just put all you kit in and it is then protected

Is there such a thing as a 12 volt microwave oven? It would be great to see if warm porkers had extra magnetic powers, and it sounds yummy after a million hours in the driving rain.

Re: Extra kit. You can get plastic handwarmer thingies - plastic bags full of liquid. You crack a wee disk inside the bag and it goes solid but warms up a treat and stays warm for about an hour. To reuse it, boil it for ten minutes in a bag. I've got two and they're brilliant.

Found one! The Samsung Roadmate 12v - 450W but it has to connect direct to car battery (not lighter socket). I could live with that, but it's 440 quid. I'm not that hungry anymore.

Dear trainees,
please do not feel that you should bring a microwave oven with you, and you will not spend a million hours in the driving rain.............some of it will be drizzle!

Err. I think you'll find that according to the blue book, section F subsection w para. 23, only Post Chiefs and I/O's are entitled to microwave ovens ...
G'night folks.
