Audi seven titles

I am trying to remember in which year Audi won the BTCC, the French, the Belgian, the German, the Italian, the Spanish, the Australian and the South African championships. (oops that makes eight).

So in which same year did they win seven or eight touring car championships?

Thks

It was 1996, but I'm not sure they won the French champ

I'm pretty sure they won 8 in 1996. After that they have only won 3? two with private teams. 1998 Australian (factory), 1999 German STW (Abt) and 2001 STCC.

I don't think even BMW has managed to achieve those kinds of results! OTOH, considering Audi must have spent tonnes of money to achieve those results, is it a suprise? Their motorsport budget must have been around 50-100M US, assuming they averaged 10M US each. Some more, some less??
Here are my guesses which totals 75M US??

Britain - Frank Biela - 20M US
Italy - Rinaldo Capello - 15M US
Belgium - Jean-Francois Hemroulle - 5MUS
South Africa - Terry Moss - 5M US
Germany - Emanuale Pirro - 20M US
Spain - Jordi Gene - 5M US
Australia - Brad Jones -5MUS

Ford Team Mondeo's BTCC budget in 2000 was said to be the largest ever, and that was approx £10million. What is $20m in pounds? surely more than £10m.

20M US=13.3M pounds.

I thought Alfa had that kind of budget as well back in the '94 BTCC?
Dodge spent $20M US for each of the years they were in the NATCC as well.

Alfa Romeo spent something like £6 million back in 1994, it was collosal compared to the other teams..still, they must have had a very little budget for the 1995 BTCC going by the performance!

I read recently in a French car magazine an interview with Audi's boss who said that the Le Mans effort cost as much as their past touring car involvement. So it was much more interesting to race at Le Mans.

I wonder what exactly did the Audi boss mean? Did he mean Audi's 4 car LeMans attack costed about the same as Audi's minimum 12 (2 A4's per a championship?) car A4 attack in '96?

I believe he said that one Le Mans attack cost as much as what they spent in touring car that fabulous year.

'Cause I thought I recall reading somewhere (this forum??) that Audis' global ST campaign costed them something like 100M US??? Sound outrageous for 7 championships, and something like 15-20 cars in total?
