Radio ettiquette

I was just reviewing the tape of Bathurst and heard something during one of the montages.

There were quite a few expressive terms being used to describe incidents, and then one team member saying that there was a fine for using bad language over the radio.

I was just curious to know if this rule was still in place, because quite frankly we all heard Ingall's comment after he passed Larry and yet there's not mention of it on the penalties list... I could probably think of a few more to get pinged as well, this isn't a dig at Russell

The penalties eventually become fines from the Dept of Communications - which you won;t see unless the team or person fights them in court...

People should not be listening if they get offended.

I was talking more about people with scanners, not the tv.

Personally I feel that 10 is at fault. They should delay radio messages by 10 seconds so that editing can take place. Radio sations have done it since Cocky was an egg.

As a driver I know that people listen in on scanners and I try to keep the language to a minimum, but in the heat of the moment it is very hard.

Mark - I don;t think any doubts that things 'get said' and I don't think anyone is complaining about that.

On the other hand though, Ch 10 has, in the past two races, let quite a lot slip through - bad enough that the f* word goes to air, but at Bathurst on at least 2 occasions the c* word made it to air as well - on one occasion the wife was in the room and - well let's just say even she thought it was off letting it go to air..

Exactly, which is why TV needs a 10 second delay on it, and scanner users should use headphones.
It's unrealistic to expect drivers & teams to concentrate on not offending someone in amongst everything else they have to do.

BTW, if you every want to hear real bad language over a scanner, tune into some of the railways freight yards

Emergency services, on the other hand, are always polite.

The magically "F" word is so commonplace thesedays im surprised anyone is offended - I actually found some of the things amusing, particularly Ross Stone...

The "C" however is pushing the envelope a bit far though. If i had to make a choice between hearing nothing and getting the full message i'd cop hearing a few clourful words everytime... Parents with kids watching probably wouldn't though so i can see both sides of the argument...

Cheers,
Paul...

Paul - after 6-7 pm I wont disagree with you about the F* word - however, that doesn't make it welcome (and no - I'm not a prude..)

But in the time slot of the afternoon - noon to 5 or 6 pm - it is an entirely different matter.

If I am watching an evening show that contains that sort of language I can, if I decide, turn it off.

But when watching motor sport I do not, and should not, expect to hear it.

sorry RT was talking on the phone as well as reading, did not see it was only about TV.
I agree with most here, make channel 10 responsible for what goes on air, and have a delay so they can edit.

I tend to agree with RT, there isnt a place for communicating this stuff, and it isnt the drivers' or teams' fault that the words are used.

Indeed there have been enough interviews with drivers and team people with the cameras on with the same words used

It gets a bit stupid tho when these car ads (like the Triton) and the Crazy Johns ads use swear words in them at prime time.

There isnt a need for it... and didnt these people watch that South Park episode... so many people said bad words that the evil spirits came out of the ground to overtake the world and spin it into a billion years of darkness... or somesuch

Of course Sakife set the precedent years ago and other drivers and Team members are now trying to be as proffesional as HRT by copying them

Channel ten choose to broadcast material which is offensive during a "G" timeslot. Everyone would burr up B1 said to B2 "wheres that ****en rat".

They should have a soap flag. Bring the driver in who swears and wash his mouth out with soap and then send him back out on the track.

A 10 second delay would the best way for 10 to treat this.

It is not a good look for the sport with numerous expletives going to air just about every time their is a telecast.

It ia unrealistic to expect the drivers and crews to 'refrain' in the heat of the moment.

Thanks Racetime, I kinda wondered why not much is said.

I personally don't care about it, I love to hear the raw emotions, just curious as to why there's never any fines about it

If anyone in Aussie or NZ is offended by any of the language they hear at Bathurst they'd have to be a total morons.Theres less cussing there than on an Eminem song.
Simple test,go and belt your thumb with a hammer and see what words you use.

Well start counting the morons - and count me in as well.

Like it or not - I do not use that language and certainly don't expect it in my house.

I hear it in movies after 9:30pm on YV - but again I do not like it.

And I certainly do not expect to hear that sort of language on TV during the afternoon.

And just because some fould mouthed yobbo who calls himself a singer uses it does not mean that the average person finds it acceptable.

For your info - ther are 17 houses in the court I live in - we all talk/discuss things amongst ourselves here - of the 17 ont three said they have no problem with the language ..... now sonny - THAT is not a majority accepted figure....
