Engine Oil Equivalents
Anybody know where I can find an equivalents chart for engine oils? You know, what is equal to what from the various makers.

Best place to look is the owners handbook of a regular production car. The ones that aren't tied to one oil supplier will give a list of equivalent oils for specific applications (temp range) from various manufacturers.
BTW if you get a handbook for a car of similar age to your own and you will get equivalents from that period, which won't necessarily be the same blend if you buy them now

theres more to it than that, you could be compairing the Viscosity (i.e 20/50 10/40 etc) API classification, oil type, i.e mineral , semi syn, fully syn, recomended operating temperature ranges, detergent/ non detergent
whats an FR2000? would it not be simpler to look up and see what the different oil companies recomend for that application? differences in oils might mean that in one brand a 5/40 is most suitable but another brand 10/40 might work better |

OK guys, seems i have been a little obtuse for you!!
An FR2000 is a Formula Renault 2000, the latest spec car. Being what it is there is an alliance with Elf, the French oil company and theirs is the only oil named in the recommended lubricants. As it happens, I, through a supplier, can get hold of another premium brand of oil at very low prices and I would like to compare the specs before I do. All I know at the moment is that it is a 5W/40 fully synthetic, like the Elf product. I would like to know more. Of course I could ask my supplier but he is perhaps likely to say "yes it's the same", just as Elf will say "no it isn't"! Which is why I was furtively looking for an unbiased source. Sorry for the confusion. (You really didn't understand FR2000??)

If you do UKFR you get free oil so much you dont know what to do with, we still have gearbox oil left over from when we did it for one year in 2002.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/ The guys that run it seem to know a hell of a lot about oil, are partially independant and VERY enthusiastic (a rare combination of good qualities in the motorsport world). They answer oil related questions on another forum but I am not if it would be 'PC' to give the details here. I suppose one viewpoint would not to be to find an equivelent oil for a given application, but to find the BEST one for that application. |
