Always been an aspect of that race.

Apart from the Finno-Ugrian connection, is this due to Mika Häkkinen's back to back wins in 1999 and 2000?

It’s probably the connection. Not sure if Hakkinen’s win did it for them. The Finns have no doubt decided this is the GP for them and I can see why

The Super Bike race at Phillip Island has been postponed from its late February date and that does not look good for the opening F1 round in March at Albert Park. https://autoaction.com.au/2020/11/10...ound-postponed. After what Victoria and specifically Melbourne has just been through I doubt there is any chance of a politician saying yes to the race and the entry embargo for Oz will still be in place along with the fortnight quarrantine ruling. I don't think any politician would risk a repeat of last year at any price.

There's a way the race happens, but it’s a bit unlikely: We’re on the verge of having a very effective vaccine and that’s likely to become vaccines soon thereafter. I could imagine the Oz restrictions being loosen by March for those that have been vaccinated. Odds against that the F1 paddock in its entirety will have their shots by then, but it’s at least possible…

Even if the vaccine is successful, why not hold the race behind closed doors as they've done in Europe, or if at all possible, with a limited crowd attendance?

Pfizer, the company that is claiming to have the vaccine, manufactures an antibiotic called Convenia which leads to cats dying.

https://catinfo.org/convenia-worth-the-risk/

They know that the drug kills cats and have chosen to do nothing about it, no ethics whatsoever!
You want a vaccine developed by this lot - good luck!

Getting out of Oz requires permission from the federal government and getting in is way harder even for citizens who have been waiting to return since COVID first started. Oz is effectively a closed nation unless you have permits to either enter or leave. Entering is subject to a fortnight quarintine which has to be paid for by those in quarantine IIRC. A vaccine is unlikely to change anything until it is proven, it might in Europe but not here.

Lack of flights

You have to stay out of the country for about three months if you leave

Getting back is very very difficult due to severely limited flights

The primary reason is the less interaction with the rest of the world means less risk of bringing it into the country from OS

Application to leave has to have a very good reason or you don't get it.

We have no land borders so this approach works for Australia and NZ who have also taken the same or similar measures. Australia had a huge industry where Asian students came into the country for tertiary education at Unis and Tech Colleges but it has had to shut down as the students were not allowed in at the beginning of the year. We have just had the 10th consecutive day of no notified infections so I can't see any large sporting events based on OS arrivals going ahead for possibly six months and some people are saying longer.

That would be a bummer if you can't get a flight in. The sooner we can get back to smooth running the better.

We've got some hope with the new vaccine now. It's been too long now. Fingers crossed

As you say the good the good thing about Oz and NZ is that they are secluded countries. Hope things get back to normal for you guys, the economy ain't great at the moment. Progress is being made towards beating this virus. I really do hope the Aussie GP is back next year, even if it doesn't happen in March. Could always happen at the end of the year like the old days, but I just hope we get to have the race either way

Wow, that's pretty awful!

I'm not very surprised that this sort of thing maybe gets brushed under the carpet in the current climate.

Vested interests. The race to be first to have a certified vaccine. Animals welfare doesn't stand a chance.

On the basis of balance, it should be noted that it does not kill cats as a rule. Just some cats may be susceptible to its side effects. This is sadly true of many drugs both those for humans and those for animals.

Unfortunately some people are still on the outdated HamsterInfo.org. If we don't migrate these people to CatInfo.org they won't be informed. Which means the 2026 Nepal Grand Prix may not be held.

Just a correction - the antibiotic you are referring to is manufactured by Zoetis Pharma, which ceased to become a subsidiary of Pfizer in 2013.

Pfizer also make chapstick. The brand. DRY LIPS ALL ROUND. Don't support cat killers!

Didn't think we'd manage to get into Big Pharma Facebook trash on an F1 thread, but apparently all we needed was CatInfo.org and some dunning kruger to get us there.

What is funny is the content on CatInfo.org was actually pretty balanced and not particularly alarmist. The label for that antibiotic shows clinical trials using approx 300 cats with death not listed as an adverse reaction. I have no reason to doubt the reports of death in cats. Maybe if there was a larger clinical trial it would generate the data to show how frequent (given existing data, probably much less than 1%). A trial size of 300 seems low, but I have no idea what is typical for testing of non-human drugs. I suspect the testing requirements are a bit looser.

As to human vaccines. I believe human vaccine clinical trials are likely to be in the tens of thousands. So the risks of taking one of the various vaccines that will be provided should be well known. And I fully expect not taking one will be a much higher risk.
