I didn't think GP2 was so bad for it this year, 2014 and 2015 I recall were worse with Lazarus and Hilmer the main culprits.

Of course, I accept that seats in the series will always go to whoever can afford them. I just think it's a huge gulf between a well-heeled career racer - say Jordan King as an example - and the likes of Salvatore del Plano

Maybe, they've expanded their focus to the entire Mazda Road to Indy, and their remaining teams are in UK-based series (F4 and BRDC F3).

What was the deal with them bringing Deletraz in for Abu Dhabi then - was it Carlin simply offering him some experience in the series, or are they genuinely looking at him as a serious option for a drive in 2017? I know he tested for Racing Engineering, and, to be honest, it wouldn't be a surprise if that's where he ended up, but it'd be strange for them to pass up the opportunity of running such a talented driver and pull out of the series altogether if they were able to...

Try looking at where Carlin have been running all year the swapping of drivers was just one sign of trouble.

Me too. I think one of the sponsors is going to Hilmer and it's a shame what happened to Carlin in recent years. The move to America was not good for the team as it looks like.

It looks like it was good decision to them.
Mate, you don't get it, do you?! I'd rather see discussion on a link that Racing Harz pasted than discussion on your list, where a lot of the names don't even talk to them teams, or are already signed in other formulas. The are threads with whole pages covered with your silly season stuff. Cool down.

King tested with Russian Time in Abu Dhabi, so he might well end up there alongside Markelov if (as seems likely) Marciello doesn't return, and it would at least keep him at the sharp end of the field. Nato is the interesting one, because I can't really see anywhere he could go that wouldn't be a step back - maybe MP might take a punt and put him in along with Sette Camara?

marciello was having a grumble to motorsport.com and said he almost certainly wouldn't be doing gp2 again. can't blame him.

i can't help but think nato's winning opportunity was this season, and that if he came back again next season he'd have to be with art or something and it'd be win or bust. if he has a decent budget again the no brainer is to take it to signatech/alpine in lmp2 like menezes and many before him have done.

I would like to see Nato back next year anyway, he had excellent pace on occasion this season and could quite easily have finished third overall with slightly better luck, what terms did he leave DAMS on from his 3.5 days, maybe he could find a seat with them?

Carlin F3 team seems to be back on their feet, thanks to Antonio's Macau gift.
Now old Trev needs to rebuild the GP2 team. When it comes to war, the rule is “Never retreat, never surrender”. But whoever said that, never met Bruno Michel and Dallara.

But Carlin did retreat in the past, FR3.5, F3, GP3; they signed Canamasas very late in off season, it looks like they struggle to find suitable and funded line up for next year. They may pull out IMO. On other hand, their team in US is very successful, and there is word that Kevin Kalkhoven moved some of his stuff from Indianapolis to Florida, they could be preparing themselves for IndyCar in 2018......

King was mentioned as Manor MP driver. If so bella, I will be dissapointed, as Marciello is my favourite to win the GP2 title in 17.

Anyone else agree with Marciello on this? Personally I'm split. They say proper talent eventually gets picked, but there have been plenty of drivers who have missed out on F1, because they don't have the dosh

Age old problem even back in 3000's heyday some top drivers never got through because they didn't have funding or their face didn't 'fit'.

Bottom line - he didn't get the job done in GP2. And you can say all you want about it being a lottery, but that's a nonsense. The talent shines through. He was there for 3 years in teams that can win races and only won one. Ferrari see much more than we do (sim work, etc) and dropped him.

I could not agree more with you, If F1 teams ask Marciello money that means he is not good enough to get into F1 without money .

tbh his comments in the motorsport.com interview sounds a little bit mean and childish

going from memory here (notoriously poor), but he reacted similarly when he lost the ferrari backing. that's fine, but if it reinforces a reputation then people aren't going to put you near the top of the list for opportunities.

he actually had a decent car for at least one year in gp2 didn't he?

Racing Engineering in 2014. Definitely a race winning team
Trident in 2015. Not a team with much pedigree, but you'd have to say that Ghiotto consistently did a better job this year in that car with less experience
Russian Time in 2016. A team where the lead driver has made the difference in the past; Marciello couldn't lead that team to the front the way that Bird and Evans did before. He let Markelov get too close to him which he shouldn't have.
