If the BARC are doing it again this year then you will hear as soon as they are able to release details.

You have to wait until the BARC send you a letter inviting you to apply.

Steve If you read the thread properly you will see that no-one has been invited because it is not yet definite that the BARC will be asked to supply marshals for this years GP.

Apart from, as Stephen says, no-one has yet been invited, I suspect they pull names/emails from a number of sources including the national MSA register, so as long as you are recorded with MSA, then you stand as much chance as anyone else.

This is based on the fact that there were more than just BARC marshals attending the FIA GT1 meeting, so they must have got those details from somewhere.

this may have some bearing on the uncertainty about the organisational side of the F1 event
(or it may not ..just something I found)

Tamas Zettner ..now the Head of Sporting for Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management.

http://www.fiainstitute.com/about/Do...ettner_bio.pdf

Hungarian CoC who apparently trained everyone for year 1 of the Turkish GP
(ie no outside assistance?).
edit...searching/reading more, looks like he's pushing hard to train more locals.
Seminars plus attendance at another race meeting.

i know they are going to go through a lot of "training" but as many know you learn more when your out doing it week in and week out. and the thought of people marshaling at an f1 event who havnt even watched a race on tv let alone been a track is a bit horrifying really

We know that, but the powers that be clearly think marshalling is easy and can be done by any old idiot. Which also explains FIA flag rules.

Like Stephen said earlier,
i think we should wait for the official word to be published.
before making an issue out of an issue that at this time isn't an issue

The 4 parts of learning are Explanation, Demonstration, Imitation, Practice.

Explanation - The training days that are being carried out by the ATCUAE will (should) cover all the aspects of marshalling

Demonstration - instructors and experienced marshals should demonstrate how to do the various marshalling disciplines

Imitation - Practical training. During training days and at subsequent race days where the trainee marshals would be mentored / instructed by experienced marshals. Due to the nature of marshalling, this would have to be done over many race days (something Yas Marina does not have)

Practice - Put what has been learnt in the 3 steps above only this time without or with limited experienced marshal help. Again, this would have done over many meetings in order to be up to a standard where attending an incident on live TV in front of 10's of millions viewers would not result in negative comments about marshalling standards.

Now think about how we, British marshals, got to attend our first Grand Prix and compare that with 1 or 2 training days followed by a 2 day radical meeting as a preparation for marshalling a Grand Prix (of which some trainees have never even seen on TV!).

I came across that Abu Dhabi training article earlier this evening completely by chance and couldn't quite believe what I read!
I've yet to marshal at F1, but to think that someone thinks it's OK to give potentials a few lessons, and marshal at (one?) Radical meeting and then they're ready to go...??

But think back to the first British GP (not your first GP, but *THE* first GP) - wouldnt it have been the same for us, but without the benefit of training (and learning at least the principles of the techniques developed by us).

Good luck to them I say...

Take this away from the glitz and perceived "high status" of F1 - would you (or the drivers) consider any meeting to be safe if every marshal present was fresh out of training, without any experience?

Importantly, in so many of the discussions on recruitment we have vastly experienced PC / IO folk saying that they struggled to safely run a post as they had more trainees than they could pair off with graded marshals. At least when the proverbial hits the air-con there is some experienced leadership to give the best immediate response possible, but if all are newbies, then headless chicken syndrome must arise.

Compare last weekend's F1 GP with the Silverstone Classic - which had most incidents and needed the higher marshalling skills? F1 may have a fair point - until there is a "big one" and a huge dose of hindsight kicks in .......

So many of you had a great time with your earlier visits to A-D, that I hope the chance comes up again for those who wish to go. BARC have put a huge effort in so far - I hope they get to keep the ball rolling for another year or two and continue to show just how good British marshals are.

Yes, that is technically correct but it must be remembered that GP racing itself was in it's infancy, many of the drivers were not professionals, and tracks/rules were undeveloped. Everyone was learning together and it was damn dangerous for all concerned. Now you have a highly professional and technical sport that demands the same level of professionalism in marshalling. You would not find the current Britsh GP marshalled by trainees with minimal/nil experience. That level of potential danger has no place in the modern sport.
