Jordygirl should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Abu Dhabi GP

Sitting watching P3 from Abu Dhabi on the TV, and the commentators have just mentioned "the British Marshals" officiating this weekend. So do you know anyone who has gone out? As I understood it they were using all "local" marshals.

I am confused, they just mentioned it again at the start of qualifying, surrounded by a team of "British" marshals. Looked like locals to me?

Very Strange, maybe someone at the BBC has been given wrong information... Guess its good publicity for the British Marshals whether it's us or not!

There are a few British marshals who have paid their own way out there. Bahrain has supplied around 100 marshals, Hungary 35 (Post chiefs?) with the rest of the marshals coming from the UAE.

I've read stuff suggesting that we were gonna be 'needed' for up to 5 years...maybe they were too told that, and nobody told them that we are in fact not required.

Linda,
I'm sure if a team of British marshals had been sent out, you would have heard about it on here.
I feel sorry for the locals. If they do a good job, they won't even now get the recognition they deserve.
Obviously the BBC haven't bothered to go around and talk to any of the marshals.

This is what I understood would be the case when I was there four weeks ago with the Radical Masters races. Our weekend was planned as a full dress rehearsal for the F1 race this current weekend. We had a total of 560+ marshals on the Saturday, split roughly as above. There are some experienced British marshals there, I am sure, on Rescue in particular.

Of course, it was a bit like old home week when I was there, with all the ex-Silverstone personnel who run the Yas circuit. I am sure Gary Dearn has everything under control!

We wish them luck for a trouble free weekend.

There was scuttlebut going around during the Korean G9rand Prix that the Brits were out of the event and possibly CAMS maybe getting approached before information came out that the UAE were going to do it themselves.

They cant have been british marshals, because not one of them congratulated Eddie Jordan on the fantastic shirt he was wearing for the Qualy session yesterday.

Are the Safety Car rules different for FIA meetings or even Formula 1?

I'm querying the clean up after the first lap incident and the route that the Safety Car took which meant that they did not use the designated lap but cut the chicane.

I was speaking to a safety car crew at a MSA meeting earlier in the year, and they did tell me that that taking a short cut, where available, is something permissible, but there are certain factors (which I can't remember) to consider. I suppose it is down to the CoC or Race Director to tell the Safety car crew which route to take on such occasions. I would assume that if MSA rules have this proviso, then so do F1 rules.

I personally thought that taking the escape road bypassing the chicane where the marshals were working was a very sensible move and certainly made life easier and safer for the guys cleaning up the mess. I also noted that once the Marshals were clear the usual route was taken.

Its up to the race director which route the safety car should take, especially if taking a "different" route will speed up the track clearance. For a number of years now there has also been the option of the safety car taking the cars through the pit lane in the event of a pit straight incident.

It's a pitty they didn't choose to do this at the Brit Car 24hr start line incident a couple of years ago. Would have made the incident handling a little easier for all involved.

The route through the pitlane was blocked by an inconsiderate Journo/Phot who stepped back as Andy swerved and fell off, braking his ankle.Or at least its what I was told at the time.

I thought the Andy Neate accident was a first lap/startline incident...therefore the pit wall should have been clear of everyone, bar any signed on marshals, as with any start so there shouldn't have been any photographers on the wall to step back and break their ankles.
