And again we have fans injured by flying debris. I'm not sure of the answer, but this is something the series must address...

It sucks, but there is a certain element of risk for fans attending many sports, whether it is pucks over the glass, baseballs and baseball hats going into the stands, etc. We can minimize it as much as possible with appropriately designed catch fencing and track setbacks, but it is inevitable that these sorts of incidences will occur

It’s inevitable that these sorts of incidences will occur if you accept that it is inevitable. To put it bluntly, the words "IndyCar" and "injury" are coming up together way too often in the last year and a half. Yes, there is and will always be risk in motorsport, but spectator injuries (or worse) are simply not acceptable in 2015. One very nasty incident with fatalities, particularly on a street circuit, will set the series back years. (See: VLN.)

I'm surprised that this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. We saw with Franchitti's accident how minimal crowd safety was. Everyone there was seriously lucky.

I remember being at the 1975 British GP at Silverstone. It had been raining on off and when the race started it was dry. When the rain came a number of drivers pitted for wets. It didn't last that long and some divers pitted again for slicks, one of those was Jean-Pierre Jarier in the Shadow.

It started raining again at Woodcote Corner and just as Jarier passed the chicane, he came off into the catch fencing in front of the main stand where I was sitting. One of the wooden poles holding the fencing broke free had sailed into the audience and hit this woman spectator on the forehead, with fortunately a glancing blow. It all happened in slow motion and I can still see it today. These things do happen but fortunately not that often.

No surprise there. It didn't matter anyways because the NG sponsorship was going away due to it's huge waste. It is necessary because we have an all volunteer military that the services advertise but the NG sponsorship in this series was a total bust with tens of millions spent with race weekend "activation" and not one person they ever got signed up entered the service.

Considering they pulled all their motorsport sponsorships I would suggest that the decision was bigger than Indycar.

It looks like Chevrolet is doing the right thing as their #1 priority should be providing their teams with the best chance to win races and the championship over them winning the manufacturer's championship.

Plus if they're the manufacturer of the Championship winning team, then that kind of makes them the de facto manufacturers champion. Even if they finish the season with negative points.

However, the Guard’s NASCAR program came under fire in May when USA Today released a report stating that the Guard had spent more than $26 million on that particular sponsorship but failed to sign up a single recruit.

The 12th engine apparently has to get its valve springs replaced after the next round too.. so another 20points off the manufacturer's points table.

Yet Chevy will probably still beat Honda...

Here's a link giving more detailed information. Sponsorship in NASCAR and Indycar was a complete flop for the NG.

The target demographic for the National Guard is primarily young adults between the ages of 18 and 24. However, only 10 percent of NASCAR viewers are between 18 and 24. The average age of an IndyCar fan is between 35 and 54 years old.

The Navy ended its own sponsorship of NASCAR in 2008 because the program was too expensive compared to the marketing benefit it received. And the Coast Guard ended its relationship with NASCAR in 2006 due to the cost of the sponsorship and only generating 350 leads for their $9.6 million investment.
