Rudd improvises after back surgery
After Ricky Rudd had surgery on a disk in his back after the end of the 2001
season, his doctors told him not to sit up for two weeks to keep pressure
off the spinal cord. "I could stand, I could walk, I could lay down but I
couldn’t sit down," Rudd said. "I had to eat every meal standing up or
laying down. But the doctor never said I had to stay in bed, he just said I
couldn’t sit."
Rudd stayed around his house for about a day and couldn’t take it any more.
"We have a Ford Navigator and we took the back seat out and opened the back
hatch," he said. "I climbed in the back and laid on my side and my wife,
Linda, and I rode all over the place for about two weeks.

"We’d get to the parking lot of a shopping mall and she’d run around to the
back, open the hatch and I would roll out onto the pavement like the family
dog."
