New UK Nat&Club mag?

I saw a new magazine at the RaceRetro show yesterday called Full Throttle. I thumbed through it briefly, and it looks like another Track and Race Car, or CCC replica.

I was hoping it would be a little more like InGear. Mind you that might change when we get into the racing season and there are some races to actually report on!

Did anyone else see this, and what did you think of it?

I bought the first issue. Not bad. Not as good as CCC but far better than Track & Race Cars (I am about to cancel my subscription) which I think is pants - poor writing & poor subject matter.

Its a Practical Performance Car spin-off. 1st issue was surprising readable, didn't expect that. But will rely on race reports once we're up and running but unless they are more detailed than Autosport and Motorsport News, they will be a waste of time

It seems alot like CCC was, and with Dave Walker on board doing some technical bits even more so.

I think they have been asking alot of people what they want in the magazine. It has alot of potential, well written so i hope it succeeds.

Club racing (all types) needs a magazine catered for us. Lets just hope it succeeds.

I have one of their reporters with me at Brands next weekend for the BTCC meeting. They are doing an article on marshalling, so it can't be all bad

It's tied up with Motorsport AD in some way. Not certain what the link is though but it could be that the funding comes from that site which may give it the legs that other mags never had.

I got the first issue as our club had a little news story in it plus our Vice President (Vic Elford) was also in there. It's being sold in Smiths at the mo and might also expand to some supermarkets later in the year, will probably get next couple of issues as well.

I had a copy sent through as a promo I think it was, and then also saw them at the AS show but really haven't seen them anywhere else so agree it's quiet. Some of our club members have said they think it's a bit expensive £4.20 / issue IIRC).

I came across this in a relatively small newsagents (independant, nothing like a Smiths). It is quite good and a good starting point and the mix is good too. They have to appeal to enough people to make it worthwhile, lets hope they do. I guess the trouble is that we can all be a little specialised in racing and nothing will match our tastes 100%.

As for £4.20, I couldn't imagine it being any less. They won't sell that many and that seems pretty standard for a mag nowadays. e.g. Motorsport Feb 2007 was £4.95 ('tis the only other mag I have to hand).

I agree - the promo / first mini issue had a pic of a non clubby car on the front which did confuse me because it contradicts what they're saying they want to be (ie club level motorsport) but everything seemed pretty much that in the first issue.

I think in comparison to other monthlys the price is roughly right but think the feeling was because it's a "new" magazine maybe it should be a little less - but then it is a spin-off from PPC which is established. I don't know many mags prices off the top of my head but I know Racecar Engineering is £4.99.

I've asked about subscription prices, but no news about that as yet (website lacks details). I haven't seen it for sale in any shops. Would be good to have a successful "In Gear" replacement.

Never even heard of it before... a national club racing magazine would be a must buy for me if it turns out to be something like that though.

I thought trc was a pretty good mag and had a free subscription from registering with the cscc tintops, but all of a sudden the race coverage stopped. Then it seemed to go all to cock with some poorly written and researched stuff. I hope full throttle does well, and for my twopenneth i reckon Kevin Leaper is a top writer.

I agree Colin. I offered to write some articles for them (purely for free) on DTRC from a novice drivers' point of view, and got knocked back. I would have thought that was exactly the kind of thing they were aiming at, but obviously I was mistaken?

That because TRC want all the competitors in a series to subscribe to the mag as part of the registration fee in exchange for coverage in the mag. How many series have gone with that is another matter and they may have to reconsider or find they have no coverage at all

After all, it would be kind of strange if the DTRC series was ignored?

DTRC will get a full review at the end of the year in the 'British Motor Racing Yearbook'. Anyone wishing to contribute to this would be welcome to PM me for a chat.

I had the same idea, Jamie - a monthly insight into a novice starting racing on a small budget - I thought it might help encourage some trackday superstars to get onto the grid. I won't bother writing a first article or taking it to them now.

I didn't renew my subscription to TRC last year, Full Throttle seems to be aimed more in the area I want to read about.

To be fair i don't expect any magazine would just allow us racers to write features for them, no-one ever has up til now! I can see why too, what do you say to the other 30,000 odd license holders when they want to write about their racing exploits. Guess it's just one of those things where you open the flood gates if you say yes to one person. Although it would be a big advantage to gaining sponsors by having your own column in a national mag, or is that something that nobody else here is thinking about...of course not, it's for the good of the readers!

More than that, it would be good for the sport. As far as I can see no-one is doing anything much to get new blood onto the track (bar the occasionally group of trackdayers starting their own race series). But I suppose that it's not the mags responsibility, same as it's not down to the circuits, or the MSA, or the clubs, or the drivers.......

Andy - although I didn't buy trc when it first started, in the back issues I've read I enjoyed your column about starting out in racing. Luke's was kind of the same, now there seems to be nothing except "newbie" guides that are full of tips for old hands and not much advice to the bricking it first-timer!

I think trying to get new blood into the sport is down to the clubs - not just the big ones eg 750MC etc but the smaller ones, the local motorclubs. Likewise, how do you recruit marshals into the sport? That's down to other marshals telling a mate etc, BMMC and other methods.

Unfortunately the promotion side of things can be difficult but I do think it's down to all involved in the sport to try and get new blood involved in all the different ways possible.
