Actually having an airport is one thing, having a flight that actually goes there is another. I don't suppose there is a regular service to Le Touquet, is there?

An even better solution - my village hostelry re-opens tonight after a three-year make-over. I can walk there in 10 minutes & you can all come & enjoy some excellent Anglo-French hospitality! We've even got a race track (Croix- en-Ternois).
ISTR it was The Vapours who did Luton Airport but happy to be corrected.

New Year gathering at Croix is fine by me! Is the circuit open? Sounds like a track day then an evening in your local hostelry.

Could be arranged! A friend of mine runs a few track days at Croix, also Abbeville, which is not far away. My hostelry has rooms, even a fishing lake, what more could you possibly want?

I was thinking of Lorraine Chase (whatever happened to her?) in connection with Luton Airport.

In answer to Max and John, my best friend Wiki informs me that Cats UK (lead singer Bea Rowley - any relation?) put out the record "Luton Airport", which did not involve Lorraine Chase. However, she later put out here own record "It's Nice 'Ere Innit", also one of her lines from the Campari adverts.

Chase has now reached the tender age of 65, and seems to have sort of retired.

I'm really sorry there was such a low turnout but think that the time of year militates against this sort of meeting, jammed as it is between Christmas and New Year festivities and a lottery weatherwise.

It might work better if we could say meet up at a race meeting where none of us are directly involved in either racing or involved in its organisation - Silverstone, Snetterton, Donington - mid country? Just a thought.

John, I'd counter that by saying that many aren't working during the 'break', so it should have been a good opportunity. And being off season, no-one is away racing!

Summer Race Meeting? Apart from possibility a few would be tied up most weekends, it would mean we would have to pay to get in unless someone comps us. And unless the 'group' went out somewhere they would be restricted to whatever facilities are on offer at the circuit...

Sounds a bit negative, I know. but can't see it as an alternative. Sorry, but I think best just to forget whole idea- it just doesn't mean enough to enough people....

The weather forecast for Mike's part of the country was not condusive to travel, had that proved correct I might have been sitting in the Ace all alone wondering whether to go home or hang on in hope. Had I not bothered (or come up with some excuse) Mike and Graham would have driven a hundred miles to sit and talk amongst themselves when they could have done that somewhat closer to home. For me a 30 mile trip is not a major problem, although the queues on the North Circular getting back are horrendous, so I would not bother again.
The best chance it seems to me for a meet would be at the Classic on Friday evening in concert with the Marshals BBQ, or the Saturday. I do not suppose everyone would attend the meeting but there would probably be a fair few about, and no one would have to worry about travel too much.

Likely I will be at the meeting anyway so would be one of a 'captive audience'. The difficulty (and I'm not trying to diss the idea- it has legs ) would be encouraging tenthers not involved in the meeting to make an effort to attend....

John, apologies if my response has caused offence! There is absolutely no reason why someone shouldn't attempt a tenthers meet up during a race weekend- but my gut feeling is that there will be few takers- even at Silverstone Classic.

From memory the idea of a get together between Xmas and NY was that it was completely off season, many people have the week off, and many were happy to get away from family etc for a chin wag and fry-up. That is obviously not the case any more.......

Despite the freezing fog, ice & -3 temperatures, a good crowd of us got my local, La Cascade, off to a rousing start when it re-opened last night. And I achieved my aim of being the first customer!

Of course that was just a test run for tonight. Happy New Year!

John, Mike,
It is unlikely that there will ever be a 'good time, venue' to stage a 'gathering' that would attract a reasonable number of forum members, as I suspect that there not actually all that many. A lot of posters here are from far flung places and I would not expect to see JE, Dougie, etc at UK events, therefore how's about a different approach?

Mike you already list all of the Historic meetings here, so why not add in a suggested meeting time and place for each event that any attendees could, if they wished stage a mini get together?
Say at the VSCC Spring Start we agreed on 12.00pm at the BRDC car park, perhaps a few might like the idea of spending some time socialising, maybe spectating, or helping out with drivers etc.

I would like to be able to put faces to some of the non-de-plumes I insult on a regular basis, and over a season we might all get to meet a number of fellow posters, at the different circuits.

I await the inevitable storm of protests.

No offence taken, Mike. However with only 3 turning up, I thought a fresh idea was warranted. I'm sure in principle there are enough of us who would be happy to meet up, but it's the usual case of herding cats (a bit like trying to put a decent grid together)! I guess if I could ever get my Revett Straight Cup (or a different name obviously at a different circuit) idea off the ground that would cater for quite a few and for those who simply wanted to turn up, I'm sure a few tickets could be found. I actually think the food at Snet is pretty good and if the weather was OK we might also find somewhere to gather to natter and watch some racing. A bit idealistic, I know but would be good to achieve.

If several tenthers are going to RR, and on the same day, then that could happen again.

A few years ago we were into double figures at the Ace!

But did they stop other people buying Max?

Or did they, in the timeless way of market stall reality tales, induce a crowd to appear with wallets open?
