Dreaming of a FIA/FIM Motorsport World Cup - Formula event

Hi, folks! Today I woke up dreaming of a FIA/FIM Motorsport World Cup, the equivalent of the Olympics and the FIFA, FIBA, IAAF and IRB World Cups. It would be held in a rotating single venue every four years. It would show all motorsport disciplines in a single event, promote technology development and road safety, and attract major audiences.

The main disciplines would be formula racing, sports prototypes, grand tourers, touring cars, rallying, rallycross, superbikes, motocross, enduro and trial. Secondary disciplines could be oval racing, trucks, drifting, hillclimbing, ice racing, freestyle motoross, etc. The final events would be karting and minibikes, with the podium finishers and polesitters from all the disciplines.

Each country would field up to 3 drivers in each discipline, so in a 24-vehicle grid there could be over a dozen countries represented.

- o -

Rather than expensive F1, I'd run the formula event with cheaper but still powerful IndyCar, GP2, Formula Renault 3.5 or AutoGP. This would be my formula grid:

o- Germany: Vettel, Schumacher, Rosberg
o- Britain: Button, Hamilton, Franchitti
o- France: Grosjean, Pagenaud, Bourdais
o- United States: Rahal, Hunter-Reay, Andretti
o- Canada: Hinchcliffe
o- Mexico: Pérez
o- Brazil: Massa, Barrichello, Castroneves
o- Australia: Webber, Power, Briscoe
o- New Zealand: Dixon
o- Japan: Kobayashi, Sato
o- Spain: Alonso, Serviá
o- Finland: Raikkonen, Kovalainen
o- Russia: Petrov

Who would you pick?

Briscoe over Ricciardo is laughable.

Well, winning multiple IndyCar races for Penske ranks higher to me than winning Formula Renault 3.5 and getting hired by a Formula 1 team based in Faenza.

Briscoe has been awful since 2009. Second rate in every way. Ricciardo has shown quality like few before him in lower ranks. If it weren't for his F1 duties, he could have been a double FR 3.5 champ in it's most competitive years.

Thanks, Coopz!

ptclaus, Briscoe was 5th in 2010 with 1 win, 3 podiums and 8 top 5, and 6th in 2011 with 4 podiums. He did retire at Indianapolis both editions. Remind that this Motorsport World Cup isn't just about the best drivers, but also about the stars.

Ricciardo, based on being in F1, already has more star power, and once he replaces Webber, that will grow ten-fold.

So if we have 4 wheels, 2 wheels, dirt and asphalt, why only single seater racers? Why no MotoGP riders? No WRC racers?

This is only the Formula part of the equation. I imagine he will be doing the others at a different point.

I mentioned all motorsport disciplines. I wrote the full formula driver list here because this thread is in the formula racing subforum ("This would be my formula grid:"). The sports car list is here. The other lists are a bit easier to pull, so I didn't take time to make them.

That seems very random, kurski. Are they your favourites?

OPs list is just F1 and Indycar drivers, ignoring other formula.

No Massa, Franchitti, Briscoe, Hunter-Reay or Serviá?

The rest of your list is fine, but I was thinking about less than 30 drivers.

Mazzacane should never drive a race car again.

I agree with much of formulahistory's list. I cut out some countries and some no hopers from represented countries and got it down to a more reasonable 48 drivers. I also made some changes (like Pagenaud over Bianchi, Vergne and Duval?), but not many.

Germany: Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Nico Hulkenburg
Britain: Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, James Calado
Finland: Kimi Räikkönen, Valteri Bottas, Heikki Kovalainen
Australia: Mark Webber, Will Power, Daniel Ricciardo
Brazil: Rubens Barrichello, Felipe Nasr, Felipe Massa
Spain: Fernando Alonso, Jaime Alguersuari, Daniel Juncadella
France: Jules Bianchi, Romain Grosjean, Loic Duval
Italy: Davide Valsecchi, Raffaele Marciello
Russia: Vitaly Petrov
Swiss: Sébastien Buemi, Fabio Leimer, Nico Müller
Japan: Kamui Kobayashi, Kazuki Nakajima, Koudai Tsukakoshi
Netherlands: Robin Frijns, Giedo van der Garde, Nigel Melker
New Zealand: Scott Dixon, Mitch Evans
Mexico: Sergio Perez, Esteban Gutiérrez
Canada: Robert Wickens, James Hinchcliffe
Portugal: Antonio Felix da Costa
Austria: Lucas Auer, Alexander Wurz
Monaco: Stefano Coletti
Venezuela: Pastor Maldonado
Belgia: Stoffel Vandoorne, Jérôme D'Ambrosio
USA: Alexander Rossi, Ryan Hunter-Reay

Yes, but all countries should have the same numbers of drivers.

And I think that Sirotkin and Kvyat are promising drivers for example.

I assume the car will be "big", so I tried to avoid leaving off youngsters that haven't accomplished all that much or don;t have much experience in "big" cars and thus might not be ready to go head-to-head with the best. I probably should have left off Lucas Auer too.
