DJR Ford Sierras
A couple of questions on DJR's Ford Sierras before everybody gets overwhelmed with the Christmas spirit, or just gets stuck into the spirits for Christmas.
The latest issue of AMC has a comphrensive article on the red rockets but leaves a couple of questions unanswered. Why did Dick run both a right hand drive and also a left hand drive Sierra in 1987. It would make sense if Dick drove both cars during the season at different tracks. The left hand car was driven by Gregg Hansford for the 1987 season. When Dick took the Sierra to England to race in 1988, why did the car carry REDKOTE sponsorship alongside smaller Shell signage on each side of the car? |

Redcote was a Ross Palmer owned brand. It also appeared on Dick's Thunderbird in the US.

Ross Palmer funded the UK trip as he was trying to get his Redkote steel buisness to take off over there.

Reasoning for RHD & LHD builds for DJR1 & DJR2:
Johnson built two cars one right and, one left hand drive to see if there was any performance advantage between the two. This was mainly believed to be because the eggenberger cars were left hand drive. From here Regarding the sponsorship for the 1988 tourist trophy race, that race was outside of the budget allocated for 1988 season, and funding was a separate exercise. While Redkote through Ross Palmer was the primary sponsor, the exercise still required additional funding from Shell and Johnson personally. |

Havent seen the article but for the record DJR 1 + 2 we sold to UK for BTCC. The left hand drive car was converted to right by DJR before it arrived.
DJR 1 stayed complete and was raced post BTCC in Asia by Grahm Hathaway, it is now owned in UK by Any Lloyd and is back in DJR livery. DJR 2 was broken up by Trakstar and used as a donor for the new 1990 Championship winner ( which has recently resurfaced in Italy) . The DJR 2 shell became a rally car and then vanished. It resurfaced in 2011 and is currently in rebuild in UK. |
