I'm new here - where should I start?
Well the FAQ is a good choice! :)

Seriously though, take a look around. All the forums are fairly well marked so you should get some idea of where your areas of interest are being discussed.

If you don't have a specific area of interest, try clicking on the "New Posts" link on the menu. This will give you a list of the most recent threads to be posted to and you can then pick a subject that interests you.

There are so many forums and everyone knows each other.......
It can certainly seem that way when you first get here. But we're a friendly crowd and you'll usually find you get a warm welcome wherever you decide to post.

If you'd like to introduce yourself to the group, check your forum of interest to see if there's a "Hello" thread. If not, contact the forum mod to see if introduction threads are allowed.

Please do not post your "hello" thread to the Announcements and Feedback forum. That's not what it is for!

Read the FAQ!
The FAQ should contain the answers to most of your initial questions. Remember, it's searchable, so if you don't have time to look through the whole thing, just search for the subject you're interested in.

If you can't find the answer here, you can try asking in the Announcements forum, or approaching one of the Moderators for assistance.

Common acronyms (like LOL, TGF etc.!)
For those of you new to forum chatting, there is a kind of forum "shorthand" that is used for certain phrases. Most of them are common to pretty much all internet forums and some of them are peculiar to Tenths! We've listed the ones that people ask most about here:

LOL Laugh Out Loud
ROFL Rolling On the Floor Laughing
ROFLMAO Rolling On the Floor Laughing My Ass Off
AFAIK As Far As I Know
IIRC If I Recall Correctly
IMHO In My Humble Opinion
TGF That German Fellow (Michael Schumacher)
TGF The Grande Fromage (Michael Schumacher)
TTFN Ta Ta For Now
FICCL Frankly I Couldn't Care Less
FWIW For What It's Worth
LTNS Long Time No See
OTOH On The Other Hand
FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
TMI Too Much Information
RTFS Read The Screen
RTMF Read The Manual First

Any other advice?
A few things that might help:
  • Don't try to read through an entire forum at once. Your head will explode!
Just read the most recent threads. If you then want to start a thread, you can use the "Search" function to find out if it's been done before.
  • Spend a little time reading a forum before posting. This will give you a chance to get to know the inhabitants and their posting styles.
  • First impressions count. Your first post is probably going to have an effect on how you are seen by the group, so..........
    • Make sure it complies with Posting Guidelines.
    • Make an effort with your spelling and grammar
    • Don't jump straight in with a rant about something (there'll be plenty of time for that later! :) )
    • If you're starting a thread rather than posting to an existing one, make sure it's not something that's been done before
Above all, have a good time!

Why don't I appear on the member list?
In the past we've had members who've registered only to have their name, profile and website added to our member list, in the mistaken belief that this will get more hits to their website. To prevent this we now only list members who have made more than 10 posts. So keep posting and eventually your name will appear in lights!

Restricted Features
There are some functions on Tenths which are only available to members who have built up a track record with us. This is no reflection on our new users. It's just that we feel that for these functions to be of any benefit, you need to have spent a good amount of time in the forums and got a feel for how Tenths works. We have put in a list of all restricted features and what level you need to be at in order to use them.
