Whilst not quite on the level of Schumacher, ASCAR in 2002 did pursue a broadly similar approach by getting the likes of Jason Plato (the reigning BTCC champion), Nicolas Minanassian (fresh from CART) and Colin McRae to race in the series. I'd imagine that the problem of such an approach is how to fund a 'star' driver and maintaining the interest once the big name have left the series. That said, I suspect that it would be great whilst it lasts.
